MAGEE An event of more than, ordin ary Interest to the residents of Polk county was tbe quilt show held at the Oak Grove grange hall - Thursday, sponsored by the Oak Grove Ladies' Aid society. the Rlckreall Ladles' Aid society and tbe Orchard Height's Wo man's club. Strictly speaking it was an art exhibit as the quilts exhibited were hand pieced and all but on hand quilted and many had interesting history stories of the early pioneer days of Oregon at tached to them. , - . j When one thinks hand pieced quilts are a thing of -the past they are much mistaken as there wert; not only work of 125 years ago, but also band pieced quilts Just recently completed. About 80 quilts were exhibit ed, vieing: in color and shape of pattern with the flowers of a garden. There were also a number of other articles made in the early days displayed. Among the quilts' exhibited ? were- quilts made by the oldest members of this Bectlon of Polk county. In cluding Mrs. Miriam Lewis," 86 years old. Mrs. E. B. Putnam, 72 years old, and Mrs. E. R.-Helse, 78 years old. v Mrs. Allen, who came to Ore gon 52 years ago' from Illinois, had 10 quilts exhibited that she has pieced inr the last 15 years. Mrs. Putnam had a qunt on dis play, "Grandmother's Garden." which contained 3000 blocks and Mrs. Helse displayed a unique ouilt called "The Colonial Rose." The floral designs wefe appll cayed on sateen. Mrs. Thomas Brunk displayed three quilts that were mad and quilted, by her mother, "Grand ma" Rhoda Byers of Independ ence after she was past 50 years old. One. "The "rose in the wil derness." received much favorable comment. Another quilt that at tracted much attention was one" made by Beulah Drinkwater Riggs in 1836, when she was 17 years old and brought across the plains in 1853. A auHt made by Mrs. Enilline Bert when she was 72 years old was displayed. Mrs. Bert is now past 8 S years of age. A display that caused ninca comment was two quilts and two bed spreads, prpperly called counterpanes, made by Mrs. Nan cy Putnam in 18 48 and brought across the plains from Missouri in 1872. One bed spread was woven of white thread, while the other one was woven of woolen thread with pattern fn two col ors. For one quilt exhibited Mrs. Putnam raised the cotton, picked it. snun the thread and wove the cloth. Red Spread 123 Years Old Mrs. Rosle Grlce Adams exhib ited a woven cotton bed spread made in Virginia 125 years ago by her grandmother, whose name could not be learned, and a wool woven spread made by her mo ther. Mrs. L. Grlce. from wool she spun at least K0 years asro. - Mrs. Frank Farmer exhibited a woolen counternane. which had been atven to her and her hus band by Mrs. C. H. Farmer that came Into the possession of the family In the sixties and came from Tennessee. ' " Nellie V. White exhibited a crocheted bed spread that wes much admired. She also showed a coverlet SO years old made by her great grandmother, Mrs. John Young. ' A quilt1 made by Sarah Ann Lewis 50 years ago was among those on display. : Mrs. J. "B. 'Ashby, of Salem, mother of Mrs. W. Knower of Oak Grove, 1 exhibited a craiy quilt that was out of the ordin ary, which was made 2 years aro by Mrs. Ashby's mother. Mrs. W. J. Humphreys, a wel-known Waldo Hill pioneer, also a small, quilt made by Mrs. Humphreys with which she used to Cover her babies. Mrs. Ashby also showed a quilt that she made . 45 years ago. Stair, who displayed a qnllt of the Pineapple pattern which was made by her grandmother. To all Intents and purposes the or- " Kanlzatlon had been dormant for 20 years or longer, but formal dissolution was not affected un til the ! recent meeting 'at the school house near the old Jordan ' store. , It is noteworthy that after sleeping 20 years, the organiza tion mustered its worthy mas'er and r Its secretary for a final meeting. F. T. Thayer was at the head of the grange when it ceas ed functioning 20 'years ago. and G. A. Sandner was secretary n.t tho same time. - Both these offi cers attended the final meeting. This . grange was organized : not later than 1875, Mr. Thayer states. .- - Djuring these two 'decades tbe 1 grange has had about 160 that was . not earning ' anything. . The ' chief object, of the meeting, aside from disbanding, was to take ac tion of disposition of the funds. Sim LODGES HAVE SILVERTON', Feb. 27 Over 200 people, attended the annual homecoming of the Royal Neigh bors and (Woodmen of America at the M. W. A. hall Wednesday night.
