Marshall Dale. 4220 Second av
enue, Seattl. was held Tuesday
until 1 o'clock in th afternoon
for State traffic '. officers and
Portland authorities. During this
time, a search was being conduct
ed in the vicinity of the Chemawa
Indian school for Robert 13 a ine,
20, also of Seattle. , . r
After an 'exciting chase that
started at the four corners east of
phemawa on the Pacific high
way, Monday night. Dale was ap
prehended on ihe school campus
in less than a quarter of an hour
by tbcpursulng state traffio offi
cers, Clayton and Morgan,
- The. chase resulted from a tip
given ' the two officers that two
men .had held up a drug store In
Portland; consequently, they were
on the- lookout for suspicious -characters.
-Sometime., after 11
o'clock. Monday night, the two
officers saw the car in. which Dale
and Balne were riding, parked by
a service station near Brooks. As
the officers turned around, - the
suspects threw their car In gear
and started toward Salem.
The otfteere discovered that
the followed ear had not . the
proper license plates. They warn-
ed the suspect to etopf with their
siren, but the fugitives speeded
up and turned the corner, leading
to Chemawa. !
Gasoline TaaJria
mown by Btkots
After a hot chase, the fugitives
tried to turn la at the Chemawa
school, but because of their speed,
they couldn't make th corner;
ee started across a field followed
by the officers. Previous to this
the officers had managed to ex
plode the fugitives' gasoline tank
with pistoh shots.'
. As the machln went around
the girls' building, the pair Jump
ed from the car. Warning, shots
caused DsJ to surrender him
self, but Balne fled.
Dal had over $14 In change
in his possession, besides a loaded
gun. He told the officers that
Balne was armed also. 1 .
After stealing the car in Au -burn
and putting on Oregon li
cense plates, stolen at Vancouver,
Wash., Dale claimed that Balne
held up the drug store in Port
lnd while Dale took the money.
As they fled, Al Illller, proprietor,
tired some shots at them, one of
which penetrated Bslne's" coat
sleeve, burning his arm but not
drawing blood. !
Thirty-four months of service
at Monroe. Wash., for robbery is
the alleged record of Balne while
Dale admits spending 10 months
In the same place for th theft -Of
an automobile.
