UNIQUE SHOWER I MEETING Week's Sermonette . Building Forces I 1 jr REV. 1. VV. EHIKHKN (lator, American Lutheran Church) The fathers who were builders and designers of Salem must have visualised a very beautiful city. The broad and spacious streets were laid out for such an ace as this. The business dis trict, well built, gives one the Impression of conservatism and thrift. New and Impressive structures have risen which beautify the downtown district. The residential district la ever expand ing over hill and vale, with many artistically designed and well kept homes, beautified with: soft green, lawns, blooming shrubs and frangrsnt roses. The home builders too have caught the vision. .' j " Salem is situated In the rich and fertile valley of the great Willamette. Majestic snow-capped mountain peaks rise out of the Cascade mountain range to the east of It. Looking west only a short distance where the mighty Pacific washes Its sands upon the shore, creating wonderful beaches where the children of the national come to play and rest. And hid only from Salem view by the low hills of the Coast mountain range. Justly are the people ot Oregon proud, of-Salem, not only because It fs beautiful, but principally because It is the capltol of their great; state. Beautiful for situation may lightly be ap plied to the capltol. The grand old administration building the new and pleasing office building the whle group located on the extremely beautiful state grounds adds dignity and signifi cance to city and state. This too, Is the home, of the governor. - Salem has great public and private schools. It has wonderful ehurches devoted exclusively to enobllng and uplifting of all men. The more we love our elty and its Institutions, the better, cleaner and stronger we will build them. It Is said that when the late IX. Oustave Dor was painting the face of the Saviour la one of his portraits of the Christ, is friend came la to examine 1L The great painter stepped back to study the impression It made on his friend. The friend turned ttnd said to him, "You must love Him or you could not paint Him so." To which the artist made answer. "Love Him I do. But as I love Him more I shall paint Htm better." How true! . , ; ! . , , And it Is not only true relative to our church and religion bat also to our line ot duty. The more we love our work, the more we dream of Its accomplishment, the better we can paint It before the world. It is also true of our homes the more we love them the better we perform our part In them.- The more love we bear each other the better we will be able to cooperate In the carrying out of our entire program of life In its every relation. PASTOR MS Raw A moa R. Mlnneman. nan- tor of Christ Evangelical i Lu theran ehnreh . ISth and State. will be In Portland Sunday In his official capacity as a visitor of ' the American Lutheran church, the aynod that resulted when the Ohio. Buffalo. And Iowa Synods merged. ' Some ron fusion has . resulted. according to Rev. Mlnneman, bo cause the newly-formed synod bears the same name as another local organisation. For the In formation of the public Mr. Mln neman wishes to state that Chffst church has no official connection with the American Lutheran church ot Salem, which belongs to the svnodl that bears the name the United Lutheran church of America, j According to Mr. Mlnneman the new name is a matter of congratulation since It 'gives ex pression to the ideals and mode of work that has been done by the merged synods which, has been and Is thoroughly American In i every sense of the term. Though local conditions In Sa lem and elsewhere may make It wise policy to use the language of the -countries from which the membership hails, yet the youth of the congregations soon speaks the language of the land , and even the services In a foreign language take cognisance of American Ideas and ideals. J Thus Christ church too has its regular English services at the same hour that all other church es have their services and counts a membership that is most Inti mately connected with the. polit ical and civic life both of the city and state, Rev. Mlnneman points out. Court Christians To Have Dinner Meeting Sunday Rev. B. F.
