Clearing of logged-off lands
taken orer by the counties for
son-payment of taxes., has been
proposed by C. H. Gram, state la
bor commissioner, as a means of
improving the unemployment Bit
nation. Gram has proposed that the
state- take orer several tracts of
. these logged-off lands in different
parts of the state, erect barracks
- adequate to house the workers,
and then proceed te clear the
lands. The workers would re
ceive a small wage and only per
sons in need would be employed.
' " After the lands are cleared they
would be divided into 10 and 20
acre tracts and Improved by -the
erection of small "houses, barns
and other buildings necessary for
farming operations. The tracts
then wouTd be sold on the Instal
ment plan.
Gram declared that this plan
would take care of sr4arga num
ber of unemployed men. and even
tually would place the lands on
the tax rolls. He said the propo
sal also would furnish homes for
many persons who are unable to
purchase lands at the prevailing
prices.
