The Alsea basketball teams played the Beth el teams on the latter's floor Fri day night. The girls game was very close and exciting In the first half but In the third half Alsea gained and the final score was 20 to 14 In Alsea's favor. Coach Wallace Wade rushed his Alabama eqnad through another fast practice today, opening the final week of training before the crimson tide entrains for Pasa dent to meet . Washington State n the New Year's day game. The team will leave next Fri day. Practice this week will be devoted to tackling, blocking. passing and kicking. . Coach Wad plans to devote much of this week" to working against Washington State plays, with the reserves in the role of the opposing team. MlfT TO BLOCK EXTRADITION FAILS Despite effort on 'part of his attorneys here to block effort to have R. J. -Dick" O'Leary returned to Salem to face charges of- obtaining money under false pretenses. Governor Norblad yes terday issued requisition for ex tradition papers. Hearing on the matter was held in the morning. with Attorneys E. M. Page and It. E. Bassett speaking for. the former restaurant owner here. Sam Burkhart, deputy sheriff. left last night for Sacramento, where papers will be presented to the California governor asking ap pearance of O'Leary In Salem. It Is expected O'Leary will fight the move to bring him, north. . , O Leary s agents here asserted at the hearing yesterday morning that collection of .money Is the only reason attempt to bring him north la being made, and said also that If accounts against him here could be .collected the complaint would be dismissed. December 12, with the Bap tist church quintet of Salem being the opponents of the local tire. It was a doubleheader game, the second team of the Baptists en gaging the second team of the lo cal high school. The first teams played a rough and close checking game, the 8a lemltes winning by means of a faster breaking- and smoother working offense. Lester DeJar- din of the locals was high point man for the game, with four field goals and three foul shots, for 11 points. He was closely followed by Wright and Parker of the Bap tists who each acored 10 points. Gerrala started the scoring In the first minute of play on a foul shot, followed elosely with an other. The Baptists then tied the score with a field goal, from then on the Gerrals boys put up a great battle, - the score at the end of the first half being 18-K In fa vor of Gerrals. in the second half the church team drew ahead af ter some hard fighting and rough basketball to win 31 to 24. Ger rals high's lack of smoothness on the offensive is due mostly to lack of practice, having only started basketball last week. The two second teams battled through a closely contested game, , the lead see-sawlng back and forth until the final whistle, Gerrals at last emerging the win ner by 2 points, 17-15 being the count. The Amity hoopsters led at the half with 30- 11 and maintained a ateady scor ing till the end of the game. The Amity boys held the Sheridan lads at bay with a close checking de fense. The outstanding defensive play was that of Ralph Woods, left guard. The scoring was well divided among the players. Amity had seren basketball let termen back this year and made a good start for the aeason by win ning their first two games, Gas ton, 48-32; and Sheridan. Governor Norblad was one of the first to buy tickets and will be right there when the gong sounds for the boys to "have at it." Governor Norblad will be one of the 10 Judgea who will award the two turkeys to the two b6ys making the best showing. The governor will not go to the Armory a stranger either, for he has been seen there before and is enthusiastic about the card be ing shown. Thirty-two rounds of fast box ing with each tighter doing his utmost for two reasons. " One ' of course la the turkey. The other and the main reason for the boys giving all - they hare Is the fact that there Is no main event and the best fight is the one. which will be the mala ,event of the evening. Thia Is something new" and Is a real chance for the boys who hare been stealing the .shows on previous cards. Buddy la a likeable ringster because he al ways puts on a real show when he enters the ring. Ambrose la faster than Young but will hare to be careful or else the Indian's right will land and if It lands squarely ! E IN JURE LEAGUE Panthers, Cougars, Bobcats, Wildcats and Tigers were the five basketball teams to survive In the Jungle league at Salem high of the 58 teams which entered. The fire cat teams eliminated the Baboons. Weasels, Lynx, Moose 'and Leopards to enter in to the final round of the league to be (laved oft among the per iod champions. -The Jungle league turned out to be a catty affair, and not only did the feline family furnish the contestants for the final round, but also two of the- runners-up. Yesterday the Leopards out- pounced the Cougars and won 14 to 2. The Leopards toyed with their opponents as though It were mice they were matched against and the losers never had a chance. Tomorrow the Wildcats and Pan thers will tangle to see which will b scratched off and which will remain to meet the Bobcats. All the money-matches were won by the local bowlers. Sam Steln bock surprised Eugene plnmen by beating J. W. Blaney, Eugene bowler, by 57 pins In a singles match. Blaney had been consid ered about the best money bowl er in the whole northwest. McKay Cherrolet Salem team. although It went to Eugene with WlUard's - Cafeteria of that city ahead of them by 77 points, rolled "- out " the ivory balls so skillfully . they finished the match 102 points ahead of the up-valley quintet. " Things still looked bad for McKays' In the fifth and last game. . But- Ray Johnson, . achieving undying fame with his teammates, scored a 245. came .and. gave the almost defeated' team . new pep, - and needed boost in plntotals. As a result the automobile men . pock eted the $120 purse and stuck out their chests with good' rea son. BakeRite Bakery plnmen of Salem needed their lead ot 53 pins gained In the first half of. the tournament, which was played here December 7, but they came through all right, winning from Heillg theatre, Eu gene, by 39 points. Scores were BakeRite 4713. Heitts 4678. , Sammy Stelnbock was in ex cellent trim and he had to be, for Blaney was 45 pins up from their first 10 games in Salem. Undaunted, Stelnbock plugged hard away, making half bis games above 200, and finally de feated the famed . Blaney. - His stakes were 1100. The Juniors of this home-and home . tournament, Emmons Clothing Co., Salem high school lads, won from Natron Printing Co., Eugene juniors, by seven pins without counting , the 185 pins up which they had remain ing to their credit from the first rounds. Commercial Body Shop of Sa lem was unable to equal the bowling of Strobel and Miller, Eugene, but their loss was lower than in the Salem games. They were 185 down In the first round and 23 more pins down in the final one. . In - senior doubles matches. Hall and Stelnbock, Salem, took first place; Mwuse and Bonney, Eugene, second; and Kan tola and M. Hemenway, Salem, third. Bill Yarnell and Bill Hemen way staged a doubles match with Donald -Blaney, ion ot J. W., and L. Rollins of Eugene, and brought further laurels to Salem, winning 1057 to 1010.
