AUTOMOTIVE SECTION m(Sm pUTOdOR NEWS - . i ' i The OREGON STATESMAN. Salem, Oregon. Sunday Morning, November SO, 1930 i PAGE THIRTEEN URGES TIB TO VISIT DREGOil California Organization En courages Travel Worth To View Scenery A new era in Pacific coast tour- iat promotion, according to W. H. reruns,,' lormer oreron newspa per man and now secretary of tbe bacramento Region Citizen coua- cil, wita head offices at Sacra mento. This organization is a quasl-of-ficial federation organised and fi nanced by the 21 interior counties of northern California and its " promotion funds are derived by public tax moneys levied by these counties. Perkins pointed out -that al though his organization la design ed primarily to induce -rremter tourist travel into the northern California area, it is now work ing oat a plan whereby it is seek ing, to cement all tourist promo tion agencies on the Pacific coast to harmonize their efforts toward getting tourists from eastern and middle-western states - to this area. If this is accomplished, be says, northern California. Oregon. Washington and . other Pacific coast aeas will harvest an in er eas ing share of tbe tourist crop. "It may sound strange to some of you, but nevertheless. Our or ganization during the present year spent a considerable sum of money in its initial work urging tourists to visit Oregon's vaca tionland during the past summer months." Bald Perkins. . . "Through oar distributing agencies and in our own 'booklets and pamphlets we called attention to tbe scenic and recreational at tractiveness of the Mount Hood Loop, the Columbia River high way, the Oregon Caves, Crater Lake and other outstanding points of interest in, Oregon. "We realize that Oregon has much to offer the tourists, and by advertising Oregon's points of In- " terests, together with our own. we are certain to get a greater share of tourist travel which will come down from Oregon over the Pa cific highway, or .will naturally follow the Pacific highway into Oregon on their return trips east If we can induce them to visit oar own northern- California' area. Perkins declared that - his or ganization maintains branch of fices at Grants Pass and at Los Angeles, where full-time assist- r ants distribute tourist publicity through hotels, auto camps, gar ages, service stations and other points of contact by automobile tourists as well as those who-come to the west coast by boat, train or airplane. "We have Just .completed ar rangements- to - distribute oar booklets through the tt railroad agencies and 1 87 automobile as sociation branches in every state of tbe anion, he said, "and I am hopeful that during my visit to Oregon this month I will be able to arrange for a reciprocal i ex change of Oregon and northern California tourist publicity, in or der that we may both earry on the work to our greater mutual advantage." - Perkins referred to the recent Tm American Reciprocal trade conference in Sacramento, .which his organization started and pro moted and which was designed to find greater markets on the American continent for Pacific coast products. "We brought more than 100 business leaders from 18 of the Latin American nations to this conference?' he said, "and real headway was made in the work of promoting greater traae. Al though our own little organiza tion originated the conference and carried it through, we had delegates from, nearly all of the western states, including several from Oregon. - . "This conference at least prov ed to the remainder , of Califor nia that we are sincere in our desires and efforts to advance the betterment of the entire coast." he said. "This confer ence will do far more for other sections than own own, but we feel that In helping other parts of promote the development of our own region."
