V--. : V- - ;K- 4U All Salem Will Dance This Week Thanksgiving Is Inspiring the true holiday spirit and with that must come dancing for true ex pression of mirth and Jollity. As a consequence there will be many more dances than Salem has seen for some time. The Illahee Country club will sponsor one of the gayest dances of the season at the club house Saturday night. Special features and elaborate holiday decorations will add Joy to the occasion which is being planned by the commit tee of William Staoey, Theron Hoover, LeRoy Garde, Bertram Thomson and V. E. Kuhn. The Subscription will sponsor the first Of its series of tour dances for the year, Wednesday night at Hazel Green. Nearly 200 club members and special guests will enjoy this Thanksgiving event. . ' ; .The THHcum club will meet Tuesday night for Its regular monthly dance at Castlllian hall. This dance if ill take on the holi day festivities. The younger folk are anticipat- ing the annual Thanksgiving ' homecoming dance sponsored by Mrs. Julia R. White. This year it will be given Thursday night at Castlllian hall. The Pilgrims first set (apart a day tor this purpose after their first harrest In 1821. Although Thanksgiving Is generally thought of as a national holiday of long standing, it was for a long time only an occasional local observance. The Massachusetts Bay Colony observed it for the first time In 1630 and frequently thereafter until about 1680 when it became annual. In Connecticut It was celebrated first in 1630 and annually after 164T. The Dutch in New Netherland appointed It day for Thanksgiving in 1644 and oo caslonally thereafter. j ' I During the Revolutlonry War the Continental Congress ap pointed one or more days Of thanksgiving each year but 1777, and after the war President Washington designated a day in 1789 and another six years later. Again at the close of the war in 1812, President Madison In response to a resolution of Congress, set apart a day for thanksgiving. By 1858 j proclamations appointing a day of thanks were Issued by governors of twenty-five states and two territories. After a short business meeting, the time was pleasantly spent In conversation and work on a quilt which is to be donated to charity as soon as it la finished. Mrs. E. H. Craig assisted the hostess In serving refreshments at the close of the afternoon. An ex change of Christmas gifts will be a i feature of the next meeting, which is -to bo held st ths home of Mn.
