Another Item on the nation's
conservation program is seen by
Prof. F. G. Baender, head of the
mechanical engineering depart
ment at Oregon State college. In
reclamation ot crank' case oil
draimngs. Baender so told the
Salem Lions club when he ad
dressed that body at its regular
Thursday noon luncheon session;
Baender declared that experi
ment has shown that oil used in
the crankcase does not wear dut.
and that after recleaning the first
time It Is even, better on than
when first used. Such reclamation
could be accomplished at the small
cost of two cents a gallon after
the initial equipment had been se
cured, he said. Cost of equip
ment would be minor.
; The professor avowed that
there Is not a lot of difference In
heavy and light oils, or thick or
thin oils, so far as the motorist is
concerned, because viseuosity or
internal friction should be about
the same for good grades of either
at a temperature of 200 degrees
F. In other worda. Raeifntr warn
ed his listeners that they should
snow wnat.ls the viseuosity at
210 degrees of the oil they use.
He conducted an experiment to
show that flames will not touch
a mettalle object touched by waiter
on the other side, this being the
basis of his exnlanation of f hp
fact that all oils are alike at cer
tain temperatures.
