as "one of a plutocracy." Delzell,
introduced by John Bayne, con
gressional committeeman for the
Marion county democratic partv
totok 'Rata in the Idol" as his
topic.
He likened the tariff system to
an idol whose worship had been
sustained by fear, prejudice and
Ignorance.
Tariffs which he said made
possible great trusts such as the
steel industry, the sugar combine,
the aluminum industry and the
concrete combine, were scored bv
Delzell. "The steel idol looks
well with the aluminum paint put
on it by Andew Mellon." said Del
zell while democrats in the audi
ence applauded.
Delzell also attacked "the idol
of subsidies" drawing material
from the government aid giren
the Union Pacific when it built
across the continent. H cited
government sale of ships bailt
during the world war as a form
of subsidy and attacked recent
mall contracts mad with ships
carrying U. S. mail to foreign
lands. .
Delxell scored the Hawley tar
iff. He blamed this legislation
for business conditions of the last
seven months which he said had
grown worse from month to
month.
The speaker concluded his re
marks with a poem he composed,
in which he laid blame for Ore
gon's alleged business plight to
the Hawley tariff.
Preceding the address, Senator
Miller of Grants Pass urged mem
bers of the chamber of commerce
to support closing the Rogue
River, a measure provided for on
the ballot November 4.
