Got a cold? Chances aroyoa r
somoono la, your family baa, tor
thero la a wide-spread epidemic
ot the common cold here aad
over the state. As an aid in
"cold fighting." the state toard
of health issues the following
bulletin and suggestions:
This epidemic ia undoubtedly T
of the highly infectious type and I
presents an entirely different
problem than that of the simple
congestive cold. The congestive
cold ia due to one becoming sud
denly chilled. The sudden change
in the circulation -causes conges
tion ot the internal organs. A hot
bath, hot drinks, and warm dry
clothing usually clear up this
type quickly.
. Tho highly Infectious cold,
however, presents a more ser
ious problem. ' This condition is
very communicable and has glT-
en, rise Co tho "catching cold." it
is a "catching disease." This
type of cold runs through entire
households, schools, offices and
factories. The infection may . ex
tend from the nose and throat
and cause complications, which
not only result in a prolonged
illness but may even cause death.
Pneumonia is a very serious dis
ease and in. many cases tho first
symptoms have been that of cold.
The highly infectious cold is
spread by droplet infection. Colds
are transmitted from person to
person by close contact, and close
contact means carelessness in
coughing and sneesing Into the
atmosphere, in using the same
eating and drinking utensils, and
others coming in contact with
persons suffering with colds and
the things they hare handled.
Mothers should not use a hand
kerchief for a child that has
cold and then use it on another
child or if she has a cold her
self she should not use her hand'
kerchief to wipe the child's nose.
It is inexcusable for an adult
with a cold to kiss children; chil
dren are highly susceptible to
colds.
Attempts have been made to
immunise persons against colds
and there are many authorities
who believe that this is an ef
fective way of preventing recur
ring colds. Persons having infect
ed teeth and tonsils and abnor
malities of the nose and throat
should have these conditions
corrected as they increase the
susceptibility to infection.
The cold with a fever sfrould
be treated only in bed. An eleva
tion of temperature is a warning
of serious complication.
Avoid colds by remembering
that they are highly infectious
and are spread by organisms
from the nose and throat. Keep

FOR LUMBER MILLS
While lumber production
throughout the northwest la 197
representative mills is off SI per
cent for the entire year, for the
last It weeks production has been
three per cent under orders and
in the last five weeks produetioa
has been six per cent under orders.
Drastic curtailment of produc
tion to meet lowered - orders has
resulted In nearly a billion feet of
lumber being taken out of produc
tion since May 1?.
According to a report made yest
esterday by the West Coast Lum
bermen's association, mill lftyen
tories hare been reduced nine per
cent In the last 19 weeks.
Summarizing, the report con
tinues: "Liquidation of stocks by
retail lumber dealers continues!
Retail stocks are lower than at
any time In recent year?, but build
ing throughout t'ae country Ig at
lower levels than at any time since
1921. The country ha? no surplus
of lumber and any Increase in lo
cal building will force lumber buying."
