HUGE TEXAS FLOOD
DALLAS, Tex., Oct. 7. (AP)
Texas streams were overloaded
in carrying away the surplus wa
ter from long time parched lands
today after torrential rains fell
generally over the state, flood
water spreading from rivers and
creeks to cause appreciable dam
age in some communities. No
lives were lost.
Brady was the hardest hit
when the usnally tranquil Brady
river spread from three to eit;ht
feet of water over several Mocks
of the business section, carrying
away from 30 to 40 small homes,
making: from 200 te 300 persona
homeless, damaging merchandise
stocks about 250.000 and float
ing off about 1.000 bales of cot
ton. The light and power plant
there was submerged and pat
out of business, the water sup
ply was menaced and there waa
a probability of a food shortage.
The water rose eight feet in
the chamber of commerce build
ing, submerged the court honse
plaia and from 60 to 70 busiuesa
houses had water in them rang
itig in dtpth from three to eight
feet.
The Guadalupe river was on
an 18-foot rUe near Kerrville,
after three days of continuous
rain, meauriug 7 3-4 inches, in
that hill country. Tonight the
water was receding slowly.
Boston, Oct. 7 (AP Repre

ened the 50th aunual convention
of the American Federation of
Labor here Monday and were told
by President .Hoover that cooper
ation, team play and the absence
of couflict during the business
depression had added strength to
the nation's industrial structure.
From William Green, president
of the federation, the heard a
plea for unitejl support in efforts
to inaugurate immediately the
five-day work week in industry.
Convention business was devot
ed to organization details and the
presentation of the annual report
of the executive council, jrvi
ously made public.
President Hoover spoke before
more than 2.200 delegates and
guests. He was accorded a tre
mendous ovation as was Mrs.
Hoover, who was presented to
the assembly.
Sounding a note of optimism ia
the face of the industrial depres
sion. President Hoover said "no
one would Invite either war or
business depression, but from
them may come some new inspir
ations." Texas has two speedboats pa
