Mew Baby Arrives- Mr. and Mrs. Allyn Nusom are receiving congratulations upon the arrival of a 19 hi pound baby boy, born August 24 at the Sa lem General hospital. Donald Cannon had the misfortune to break his wrist while cranking the engine on the combine. The accident happened Just as the boys were finishing the har vesting of the crop of Frank Parmer's. Frank Stevens has left for the hop yards near Independence to work. Torgerson, 86 T Seriously 111 . SILVERTOX, Sept. 4. Andrew Toi-pc-ivon whO is 86 years of age, is very ill at his home on Fiak street. Mr: Torgerson has been a resident of the Sllverton community for over 25 years. For a number of years he farmed out toward the Brush Creek dis trict but for the past few years he has lived In Sllverton. His wife 'died August 10, 1929. For the past two omnths he has been growing gradually weaker until now he is in a critical condition. Big Hops Shown By Butsch Bros. MT. ANGEL, Sept. 4 Butsch Brothers residing six miles north of Mt. Angel, have on dis play in the window of the First National bank a cluster of hops 4 y to five Inches in length which are said to be unusually large. They also report a yield of 3200 pounds of hops to the acre. Jensen Going To Astoria Job BRUSH CREEK, Sept. 4 Reu ben Jensen with his mother, Mrs. Anna K. Jensen and his neice. Miss Vivian Bunesf are spending a few days at the coast before Mr. Jensen has to leave for his work as Instructor In the high school at Astoria. Mr. Jen sen will leave for Astoria on Sunday. In the bloom ing season Mr. McNeer dog IS hilla. Tbese yielded 74 pounds of potatoes. This week Mr. McNeer dog a few mere hflls. One bill alone yielded ten and a half pownds. The largest po tato was 91 ounces. Seem ingly there are no small ones. They are all exception ally smooth and of excellent quality. The patch is only 16 by 28 feet and Mr. McXeer is keeping account of the en tire yield. He credit the fine erop to the faet that he sowed vetch in the plot last year and turned it under. Belgium, landed at FcO is en Rocte! Geese Seen Going" South at ML Angel OAK GROVE, Sept. 4. The first southward flying of a large flock of geese was observed Sunday evening, August 81. There always are a few large flocks going over a lit tle later, but no snch migra tion as there wsed to be in the early days. - In the times of the '80s and '90s it was a common thing to see several flocks of 200 to 500 birds at any time of the day, in the fall or spring. IE1ER STORES TO EXTENDI EIH Announcement made this week that the Lerner stores corpora tion selling, women's apparel haa signed a 2-year lease oa property la Eugene at a consideration said to approximate ixso.oos. is-or. interest here. That corporation announced some weeks ago that it would coma Into the Salem territory, and that it had leased the building now occupied by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company from A. A. Keene, lo cal Jeweler. The corporation will establish Oregon headquarters in Portland, and has leased property thsre but has not as yet started operations in this state. It is not probable either the Salem or Eugene stores will be opened until the Portland one Is under way. The telephone company will be out of its Quar ters on Liberty street some time ia April, according to present plans, and the eastern concern may start remodeling any time after that. Mr. Keene has no in formation, yet as to when the cor poration will open the store here.
