ME TVu5- SO I 0 Causes Traceable in Nearly Every Case, Bulletirr " Points Out Hay fever need no longer be a bugaboo to susceptible persons, for there are definite means bt determining the- cause ot 'most cases of seasonal hay fever, and eradicating, the source, says the weekly bulletin of the . state board of health Jt is estimated that about fire per cent of the population of the United States suffers from some form ot hay fever or asthma. The bulletin ays: . Until .relatively rejeent years there was little that could be done for the relief and cure ot these two ailments. The offend ing sabstance in the majority ot cases ot . seasonal hay lexer Is the pollen from wind-borne pol linated plants which include many of the flowers, grasses, weeds and trees. By no means are pollens the entire cause pot hay fever. Many patients have symptoms throughout the entire year, not due to pollen at all, but due to substances which are inhaled, such as dandruff from various animals. These are, for example, dandruff from cats, dogs, rabbits and horses; from fowls, such as chickens, ducks, geese; or from dusts, such as or ris root, talcum powder, face powder or from other dusts. Not All Foods Agree, Noticed Many persons, especially chil dren, have asthma due to a sen sitivity to one or more foods, or" to a combination of foods, which' they eat. Inheritance determines largely whether or not an indi vidual will develop hay fever or asthma. From the standpoint of preven tion it is important to protect persons from coming in contact with massive doses of the sub stance to which they frequently become sensitive. They should be protected from contact with the pollen of certain plants and the dust of taripus animals such as dogs, cats, horses and cattle, and the dust from powders. Pets in the house should not be allowed. Feather beds and feather pillows should be refilled with cotton or kapok. At the present time there are definite means of determining the cause of practically all eases of seasonal hay fever. Modern methods of treatment give relief In a large percentage of cases and at the same time prevent asthma. Another method of preventing hay fever is the careful cutting of weeds and grasses that grow ta back yard's and vacant lots of our cities.
