Specifications of the latest la
novatlon in the automotive world,
the new American Austin "ban

Salem Astomablla company, local
agents for the automobile. The
car has been on display at their
show rooms on North Commercial
street for the past three days and
has been the ibjeet of more than
one curious glance.
During the brief time of the
demonstration .here, literally
thousands inspected the car and
many of them had a taste of Its
actual performance. Many orders
have been placed already for de
livery soon the dealer says.
Economy of operation is the
chief argument advanced by the
company's salesmen. In addition
it Is said to he an excellent town
car for Its ease of handling, small
size, and small turning radius,
make It an ideal ear to dodge in
and out of traffic Jams. The min

The frame which forms the
foundation la probably the most
unusual unit In the entire assem
bly. The side rails taper from a
point just ahead of the rear axle
at such an angle that they coma
close together at tha center of
the front axle, giving a three
point suspension for the body and
permitting tha engine to be bolt
ed directly to the side rails with
out the addition of sub-members.
The fact that the rear springs are
cantilevers connected below the
frame and tha front springs are
transverse, carries out the three
point suspension Idea and conse
quently Is a material factor in re
lieving body stress.
The engine Is a four-cylinder
L-head type mounted solidly in
the frame. Tha dutch and trans
mission are -mounted ia connec
tion with the erankcase in a bell
housing forming a unit power
plant. The engine has a bore aad
compression ratio is approxi
mately 8 to 1.
