Old Potato Stock Is
Large; Shipments
of Peas Heavy
PORTLAND, Jane 14 (AP)
Butter and egg; values both ap
peared, weak today but no price
change we're announced. Re
ceipts have been laige and demand
light in comparison.
Reviewing: the fruit and vege
table situation, the Portland bu
reau of the U. 8. Department of
Agriculture says:
"Old potatoes at Portland's four
principal cold storage warehouses
totalled 17,000 sacks, or about 47
cars, on May 12. Of thia volume,
It 13 estimated that about 4 5 per
cent is table stock; the remainder
being seed. Seed withdrawals are
fairly liberal but apparently
much planting hag not yet been
completed.
"Movement of early varieties
of green peas is now at it height,
and quality Is generally very
good. As one shipper expresses it
'the recent warm weather gave
the peasplenty size, the present
cool weather is keeping them on
th vines, fresh and green'."
"Heavy pea shipments from
Idaho are remoTing some of the
active eastern demand which has
existed during the past two
weeks. Today' market is steady
though.
"Carrots, beets, and turnips are
in only sufficient supply for Port
land's requirements, with no ex
portable surplus. At 4 5c Per dozen
bunches, these commodities are
too high to permit shipment.
"The cantaloupe market has
recovered from its recent over
supply and depression. Today's
market Is firm, and prices strong
er. Quoting one of Portland's job
bers 'We've all taken our losses
on earlier high" priced purchases,
and are making fair profits again
on present lower-priced stock."
