"Not!, you're the master ol this
skip," she said thoughtfully. "Old
Jonathan Felt put her in yoar
charge. You are responsible for
her. And that puts certain obliga
tions on you. Noll. An obligation
to be wise, and to be prudent, aad
to be brave."
He came back and Fat down be
side her. She touched his knee.
"You are like a king aboard
here, Noll. And the king can do
no wrong. I would not go to
I Manger if I were you. You made
i a mistake, but there is no need
jyou should humble yourself be
i fore the men. Thy would not un
derstand; they would only despise
you. Noll,"
"Let them!" he said hotly.
"They're sneaking, spiueless."
"Let them fear you; let them
hate you." he told him. "But
never let them forget you are
master, Noli. Don't go to Mai
ger." He had no real desire to go.
He wished only to bask in her
new-found sympathy. And he
yielded readily enough at last.
The matter passed abruptly
She rose; he went up on deck; the
Sally Sims went on her way. And
for a day or two Noll Wing, an
old man, was like a boy Who has
repented and been forgiven.
Mauger Yeturned to his duties
the second day. He wore a band
age across hU fcae: snd wher It
was discarded a week later the
hollow socket where hlg eye had
ben was reveled. His suffering
had worked a terrible change ta
the man; he had been morose aad
desperate; he was now too mneh
givn to chuckling, as though at
some secret Jest of his own. He
went slyly about his tasks; he
seemed to hare a prido in his mis
fortune; when he saw men shrink
with distaste at sight ot his sear
red countenance he chuckled un
der his breath. In the upper lid
some maimed nerve persisted in
living. It twitched, now and then
in such a fashion that Mauger
seemed to be winking with that
deep hollow la his face.
