PAGE EIGHT The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon, Wednesday Morning, Jane 11, 1930 f 7"ni rrcvrr Ah ha! The dope's out. Bob Mathews Is going to quit coach ing and take up engineering for a paper company. The world in general didn't know Matty was an engineer, but his contemporaries at Willamette, 1915-1920, knew it full well. Take a look at the concrete sidewalks on the Willam ette campus. Matty laid out and supervised construction of more than half of them. A small thing, you might say, but they're there, "concrete" evidence of his hav ing been at Willamette. As for giving up coaching, we wouldn't blame anybody for that, Matty may not Ret his name ia the papers so often from now on, but maybe he'll be able to sleep nights. A while back we mentioned something about "times at bat" in the box .scores. When Corval lis played Salem here Sunday the Cbicks registered only 22 times at bit as against 24 putouts against them, and that consti tutes a record insofar as our ex perience of scoring games is con cerned. The answer is seven bases on balls and three sacrifice hits; ten actual times at bat not counted in tbe scoring, and four putouts of men who were on base against 12 ho got on tbe paths. See if you can beat it. Be It known to all concerned, which may mean only our imme diate family, we've got a different job now. All we do is gather and write the sport news making us the first full time exclusive sport writer in the state outside of Portland. That K of course, if you don't count a little detail of editing all the general news copy that comes in over the wire or is turned in by the reporters, and writing the headlines. Fight ' o . as II MI BOUT G IVW Will be at Armory Tonight That latter chose puts up in touch with things in general in cluding the minor news that gets into the waste basket because The .Statesman isn't quite the N. Y. World yet. Here's a sample: WASHINGTON. June 9. (Al) SwkiuR to prevent what It alleged was an Illegal conspiracy in restaurant of trade, the department of jus tice today ordered seized 5,04)4) cases of Xorwegimi fcaitlinea held In a New York warehouse. Now isn't that a caution? We've heard of things being tighter than .ardines in a can. but we never knew they were crowding every thing else out of the restaurants. There was another story about experiments with organ music to treat nervous diseases. Fine idea, may be, but if we were the pa tient, we'd want to pick the or gan, the organist and the music. Especially the music. DALLAS ATHLETES END n DALLAS. June 10 I Special ) Dallas high has concluded one of its most successful seasons in ath letics, winning three out of four county championships. In football Dallas made its poor est showing, winning only two out of six games played. Independence won the cup for the second consec- I utive year. In basketball Dallas won the county and district championships and managed to reach the semi finals in the consolation series in the state .tournament. Pendleton put Dallas out of the champion ship race for a three point margin nd later the same team eliminat ed Dallas from the consolation scries by a one point lead. Dallas took the track cup by a C2 to 27 win over Independence, Us nearest opponent. This broke Independence's 'winning streak, v hich bad lasted for seven years. Dallas defeated Independence in the title playoff in baseball, 21 to 10. This .game was played at Monmouth. Each team had won one other game, both by close hcores. With a number of lettermen back next year Dallas hopes to repeat this performance in addi tion to winning in football. Hungry Fans to Get View Of Padded Gloves in Action Once More Padded gloves instead of a pad ded floor and exhortions to "sock him with that left" instead of mild counsel to "break it off" will prevail at the armory tonight. The fight game is coming back to break into a long series of bone crushing sprees. Art Akers of West Salem and Lee Davis of Clatskanie are Nlled for the ten round main event and judging from advance informa tion it will be a fast one. Akers has held his own with men of his own weight here though he suffered some defeats when he went out or his class. Davis has to his credit a draw with Teddy Fox, gome months ago at Cottage Grove, and that ought to be suf ficient recommendation. He has proven popular when appearing on Portland cards. Tonight's show is a little long er on paper than most. There will be two six round fights, one featuring Jackie Kileen and Alvin Somalo, the other Bobby Ambrose and Manila Tiger. There will be two four round bouts. The reviv al of the fight game brings Tom Loutitt back as the ring official. ie BK OUT 2 HOMERS. DOUBLE Two home runs and a two bag ger, were included in the quota of hits . garnered by Harvey, Pepco first baseman, in Tuesday night's Industrial league game which Pepco won from Kay Wool en Mills 8 to 2. Harvey's hits lacked one of being all the elec tricians made, and he drove in all but one of the runs. In the first inning Boytana and Merriott walked and Harvey hom ed for three tallies. In the- sec ond Boytana was hit by a pitched ball, and scored on Harvey's two bagger. in the fourth Seeley singled. Merriott walked and Har vey homed for three runs again. Teed scored the other run in the first on a walk, an error, a field er's choice and a passed ball. Merriott struck out ten bats men, including seven in a row; the last man in the first inning and three in the second and third each. Westley of Kay Mills was credited with seven strikeouts.
