Text: 1 Corinthian 14. ti.JS.
Thua are the secrets of hi heart mads manifest ; and so, faillne
down on bis face, be will worship God. and report that God la in you of
a truth. How la it then, brethren I When ye com together, every on f
you hath a penim, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath sv revelation, hath
an Interpratatlass. Let all thing be dome unto edlfylns."
. Evary Christian knows he ought to attend chnrch. Every
Christian -worthy of the name also wants to go to the house
of the Lord. "
'Oar attending: church, however, should be for oar edifica
tion. Head again the above text.
What benefits would we derive if we heard words and sounds
uttered in ecstacy or great emotion In praise of God, but not un
derstood by us; what of melodious spiritual hymns sung by choir
or soloist, but their contents unintelligible; what of sermons de
livered la high-sounding, faultless English, hut beyond our grasp;
what If the teaching of God's Word had degenerated into a mere
prating about one's own inter pretatlon? Would a hungry soul
there receive the bread of Life, or a sin-troubled heart balm
and healing?
If the above quoted text'ls to mean anything to us, it cer
tainly has this import: Let our worship be done unto edifying.
Let our worship be: for the upbuilding of onr souls In our most
holy Christian faith. "Let aU things be done unto edifying." Hay
we ever appreciate and thank God that we still have houses of
worship where services are marked by quiet, solemn dignity and
preaching free from showy sensationalism, but powerful In lead
' lng men the way to eternal life through resentence of ain and
.faith in Jesus Christ, God's Son, our Saviour, whose suffering and
dying upon the cross made good our sins.
May the preaching of this Word have opened unto ua the
secret sinfulness of our heart; may It have brought peace and
comfort, Joy and hope to our sin-sick heart through simple trust
In the sweetness of our Saviour's love. And then may we join
In heartily with the entire congregation in hymns of praise -and
prayer of thanks sent upward to our gracious Lord.
. Let us pray:
Lord, Holy Spirit, grant unto us that w may not look for ths gift
of tongues or new revelations today, which are no more needed for oar
aoul'a welfare, but keep ua steadfast In the aura teachings and promise f
Thy revealed word, given unto ua lrr the Holy Scripture, Grant unto ua
faithful pastors who preach Thyyuwrddiutnutii and purity, with power and
conviction. Cause this word to be xruitfQLln, oiia hearts and lives : to eon
vert us from our sins, to place our trust of solvation alone in Jesus' mer
its, and to Shun and fight sin. Keep us ever steadfast i: true faith unto
a bleased end, and then let us praise and glorify The with th Father and
th Son for evermore in heaven for Thy mercy and goodness. Amen.
