They were dead tired and choked with the emotion of their mission, but ra diant with pride. After their arrival, the little lavatydes station, on the left bank of the Seine, once again assumed Its war-time appearance. It was crowded with men ia American and French uniforms and bung with Intertwined French and Am erican flags. The mothers headed by their elected president, Mrs. Sarah G Thompson, of New York, and by Mrs. Era Llndsey, Bethel Ohio, dean ia aoint of are. were greet ed by about 25 American army of-j fleers In fall uniform, led by Col onel G. G. Bartlett. The French government offi cially welcomed them, being rep: resented by Gaston Baceuet, chief f cabinet for the under-eecretary ef Tonrism. M. A .very good rhythm song act was presented by six little girls" a Master Roland Cleveland said In introducing them. Master Cleveland was as good as mas ter of ceremonies as be was band director. These youngsters have been trained since last fall In the first and second grades by Mrs. Emily Pan ten. Mrs. Vera Ingham, assist ed by Mrs. Ted Gordon. They be gan their musical instruction by simple clapping of bands, then began using wooden sticks, and finally were given the instruments when they had mastered the idea Of rhythm. - There were three competing elabs. Silver ten, which cam to Salem as a result of winning the contest in north east section of the country; Turner which won at Aamsville in competition in the southeast part of the county; and Liberty, which won the district surrounding Salem at Salem Heights. This ia the third year that this contest has been conducted by the Federated clubs, and this is the tint year that a trophy dub has been woa. Only one trophy was presented and this bears the- in signia, "Fox Elsinore trophy. Mar- too county Federated community eiubs. talent contest." On the re verse aide there is space for the engraving of names of winners from year to year and the date. Excellent acts were presented by the other clnbs competing and the best of good spirits prevailed. Silvertea sent its band as a com plimentary courtesy to the talent meet. The opera was suns as a c hor ns, no special costuming or ytage setting being used so that the ef fect was that of voice rather than any stage effect, and the results were surprisingly excellent. The chores seemed to be made np of superior individual toIcos, which blended into a strong, sym pathetic interpretation of this fiery opera. The director. Dr. Joseph Andre, a slight, white haired man. led his chorus with vision and feeling. Laura Lavery Pruner sang the role of Carmen; Homer Siegfried. Ti Mrs. May Boyce Passes Friday Mrs. May P. Boyce, mother of Gay O. Boyce of this city, died late yesterday at the borne of her son on 1879 Market street.
