Foreign Rates Show
Reduction; Effect
Here Feared
Barley markets continued dull
during the week. Influenced by a
slow demand both: from domestic
buyers and exporters, according to
the Weekly Barley Market Review
of the UniteSi States Bureau of ag
ricultural economics. Domestic
prices held mostly unchanged, but
foreign barleys were offered low
er than a week ago In English
markets. Black Sea shipments
continued heavy and constituted
about three-fourths of the world
exports which totaled 42.760
tons. About 6,009' tons of the
Black Sea shipments were of Rns-
sian barley, a cargo of which was
reported" sold In England during
the week at $1.00 per 100. Prices
of .other Feed grains held practic
ally .unchanged in the principal
domestic markets, but demand
was only of moderate volume.
The San Francisco barlejaiar
ket was rather inactive with frad
ing light. Export inquiry was very
dull and buyers, of Feed barley
were generally taking only suffi
cient for immediate needs. Hold
ers were reported more disposed
to sell their surplus of old barley
to avoid the payment of new sea
son storage charges which will be
gin at the first of June, but sell
ing pressure was not heavy.
Weather continued favorable for
the growth of the crop in the San
Joaquin valley where harvesting
will begin late in the month. Only
a few small sales of new crop bar
ley for future shipment have been
reported to date.
Pacific Northwestern barley
markets continued quiet with only
a few arrivals reported at Port
land, Tacoma and Seattle. These,
together with local supplies how
ever, were sufficient for current
trade need 3 and the market was
weak. No. 2, 46 pound local barley
sacked, was quoted at Portland at
$1.40, and No. 2, 46 pound eastern
barley in bulk, at $1.50 per 100.
Mixed reed manuiacturers were
the principal buyers. Inter-moun
tain barley markets were also
quiet with movement light. No. 3
barley was quoted at Denver at
$1.20-1.25 and No. 1 feed barley
at $1.10-1.15 per 100.
Eastern barley markets were
also dull but price changes were
unimportant. Good malting types
were readily taken but there was
only a fair Inquiry for feed bar
ley. Choice to fancy malting bar
ley was quoted May 8 at Minneap
olis at $1.20-1.22 and at Chicago
at $1.31-1.37 per 100. Feed bar
ley was quoted at Minneapolis at
99c to $1.10, and at Chicago at
$1.11-1.21 per. 100.
