The Week's Sermonette
The Crucified Life
By REV. C. W. HATCH
(Pastor First Church of God)
PASTORS
ATTENDING
ANNUAL CONFERENCE
"Then said Jesus unto His disciples, "if any man will come
after me. let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow
me. For whosoever will save bis life shall ose it: and whosoever
will lose his life for my sake shall find it." Matt. 11:24,25. To the
one who wishes to follow Christ, the way of the cross is the only
road to follow. It is the only road with the promise of the Christ
life within. It is the only way we may truly find the life spoke of
in the last of the above text.
There are three steps Involved in finding our lhres. First a
denial of self, selfish ambitions; second, a bearing -of the cross
to Calvary, there to die; third, the life to which we are raised
through Christ. Paul expresses, it very clearly in his Galation
letter, chapter 2:20 "I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I
live; yet not I but Christ llveth in me."
The matter of becoming a christian is not merely turning
over a new leaf. It is not merely forming good resolutions. It ia
not merely joining church. It is not merely beginning to do relig
ious duties. IT IS DEATH. It is a death as real as the- death of
Jesus. It is a crucifixion as real as the crucifixion of our Lord. It
is being raised to walk in newness of life with Him, just as truly
as he was raised. -
There is no use wasting words about it. If we have not tak
en the way of the cross, if we have not died, if we have not re
ceived His life in us, we are none of his. In the crucified life will
we "find" our real life the life eternal.
