PAGE EIGHT The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem. Oregon, Wednesday Morning, April 23, 1930 Wr-estle Under Police GazeUe Rules Karadck. McCann to 4o - f ' mam CURTIS Believe It or not the Albany boys blamed the umpire for their defeat here Sunday! Taking Into consideration that the Albany Democrat-Herald didn't hare a sports writer on the job here Sun day, read this:- "Al Fortier took the mound for the Alcoa but he got away to a poor start when Umpire Shy Huntington called his first pitch that cut the plate in two a ball. This rather unbalanced Al and he yielded a walk to the first bats man. Then an error or two fol lowed to further disconcert him and before the inning had ended four runs had crossed the plate . . . Albany lost the game but the umpiring didn't look any too good to the Alcos. Old Frisco Edwards, behind the bat for Salem, called too many decisions himself." We learn from the same, source that the reason "Sadie" Hecker didn't play was that h had lnjurrd shoulder. He looked it when he went in to pinch hit, "Sadie" will bolster p that tafleld when he gets In shape thowgh; Harne did a good enongh 'job Sunday. Brooklyn must be a tough town for sport writers. The new press box in the Dodgers' ball park 1 as bullet-proof glass panels in it. The Bend ball players this year will wear the uniforms Connie Mack's Athletics wore last fall when they won the world aeries. Some real enter prise, oar old home town is showing. Springfield has a "roof garden" abore Its fire station. Boy, did you ever see Springfield's fire sta tion? Salem had a bigger one in 1875. o Some recent discussion of scor ing in golf has brought out the fact that most golfers think there'g only one way to count scores other than the highly ad Tertised method of claiming a practice stroke when you miss. Some golfers, not .all, know the difference between medal play and match play. In medal play, of coarse, you win or lose on the number of strokes for the round, and In match play you score by he number of holes won or lost. Mention "syndicates" to most golfers and they think you're trying to sell 'em oil stocks. But that's the method of scoring anything from a threesome np, more or less on , the match play theory, with the low man stuck for the luncheon checks. Then there's the two point sys tem for foursomes, one point for Ipw ball and one for low aggre gate. If Spec Keene got a four and bis partner Luke Gill a six while their opponents Ralph Cole man and Slats Gill each scored sixes, Spec and Luke would score two points but It wouldn't do them any good because the other three would faint when Spec turned In a four and the round never would be finished. A variation of this is low baU and high ball, which isn't con trary to the prohibition law. If Ercel got a four and Graham a even while Rex and Fred scored a fire and a six, nobody would get any points, but If Graham had sunk that nine-inch putt and haired Fred, the pros would have cored one point. Is that clear? Then there's bridge golf, de signed for fellows who like to do two things at once. Doc Spears wins the toss and gets first bid; looks over the fair way and bids a six. Tom Turn er feels lucky and bids five; whereupon Bobby Rowe dou bles him and he and Doc eol Ject BO cents each instead of a quarter when Tom gets an eight. -o Drinkers handicap is a former ly popular game now reported to be waning.. Especially good in cold weather. Everybody takes a little alp at the first tee to warm up. Three players do the first hole In par and the other takes a five, so the three take another nip and the high man is left out Tals method has the virtue of erenlng np the game as the round, progresses.
