Beautiful Program Is MacDowell Club Event One of the oustanding programs for the MacDowell club year will be that sung by Miss Nancy Thiel sen under the auspices of the clnb April 28 in Waller hall of Will amette university. Miss Thielsen has won much recognition for her beautiful voice work and her selections of songs will-be that which will give her mmany friends In Salem a chance to hear her at her beat. Miss Thiel sen has not sung a program in Salem since her work in the Uni versity of Oregon, where she is a junior, and where she has ap- peared in some outstanding pro ductions both in the University and in Portland. Engagement Told at Elaster Breakfast Delta Phi sorority entertained with a 9 o'clock Easter breakfast at the sorority house Sunday morning. The guests were seated at small tables centered with lilacs and daronicum, the color note of the decorations. An artistic ar rangement of lilac, wisteria and roses decorated the guest rooms. Just at the close of breakfast Miss Lillian Scott sang "At Dawn ing" and this was followed by "Caught in the Web of Love sung as a duet by Miss Mary Al len and . Miss Nellie Badley who were concealed behind an lm provised spiderweb in the cctfner of the dining room. As this was being sung, cards bearing the names of Virginia Edwards and Hugh Currin were passed to the guests by Marian Bretz, Marjorie M osier, Betty Lewis and Mildred Wampler. No definite plans have been announced for the marriage of this popular couple, who are both juniors in WilU :ette uni versity. Mr. Currin is from Klam ath Falls and Miss Edwards is the daughter of Mrs. Paul Edwards, housemother of the Delta Phi house. At the close of breakfast and the announcement other musical numbers were given by Miss Iva Clare Love, and Miss Scott. Miss Badley also gave a reading. Fol lowing the breakfast hour the whole party attended the 11:00 o'clock Easter service at the First Methodist church. Special guests for the break fast in addition to the members of the sorority were Mrs. Paul Ed wards, housemother, and Paul Ackerman. R; Tea Will Be Pretty Affair Many prominent matrons of Jefferson, Woodburn, Dallas, as well aa those of Salem are mak ing reservations for the bridge tea which will be . sponsored at the home of Mrs. J. Lyman Steed by members of the D. A. R. Thurs day afternoon. The program Is in charge of Mrs. Steed and will be given by members of . the school of the deaf. One number pinned which Is drawing particular attention is the folk dance which will be given by a group of these school chil dren. Lilacs and tulips as well as blossoms brought from the woods nearby were used in profusion to adorn the rooms. Quilts were pieced which will be sold for charity fund.' A pot luck bunch was enjoyed at noon. During the business meeting, Mrs. Henry Stafford was appoint ed assistant buyer; and Mrs. Ed Sharff was appointed assistant treasurer. Plans were made for the an nual picnic which will be held at Woodland Park Sunday, June 1. An Easter egg hunt was ar ranged by the hostess for the so cial hour. "First prize was won by Mrs. Otto Russell, second prize was given Eleanor Brown. Mrs. Robert Fromm, one of the enter tainment committee gave a clever reading. Heights grade school to give a talk on pioneer life and history of Oregon. Mrs. Merrill taught in one of the first log cab in schools in this state and was well qualified to give the chil dren an insight Into the hard ships and pioneer days of the early Oregon settlers. Coming from one who had actually exper ienced conditions In the old days, the students were highly atten tive and appreciative, of Mrs. Merrill's talk. April 21 Of interest to many along this road will be the news that after August first our address will be Silverton instead of Gervais. The postal inspector has been through and decided to give this part of the Gervais route to Sil verton and combine the three Ger vais routes into two. Beginning at the Shannon church the route from Silverton will go north to the Russ corner then east past the Ellis Stevens farm south and west again to the Fletcher corner and then retrace a mile south to the church.
