Rook outfieder was fraterniz ing with three friends on the field and had to run over two of them in chasing a fly ball. Rah! Rah! I)wk or la it Quack! Quark!? We knew they'd win a game if every body would juKt be patient with them. Young Van Cleave, Salem high pitcher, will have an "Iron Man" reputation If this program keeps up; he pitched three games in a week and was still going strong after the last one went ten inn ings. Here's one for the book. A youthful ball-player on the Salem high team borrowed a pair of sjiding pads from a relative who is quite prominent in the game around here. But when the red and black squad started for Corvallis Saturday, he said he was going to leave them at home. 'Luke called sliding practice for Monday, night; I won't need them until then." the youngster explained to his famous relative. Reports from Alhany say Dew Anderson and Wildcat McCann wr" ;f 1m1 "clean" for a while and the fans didn't like It. Sort of a jazz appetite those Abany fans have acquired. That home run scored by George Scales at Eugene was an other queer one. George hit the ball ont of the park and it bounced back in. The Webfoots fielded it in time to put him out, but it was ruled that the ball was "outside" and had no business coming back. Guess the Webfoots have re venge for thone two basketball defeats at Willamette's hands. LEAGUE PRESIDENTS TEH THEIR VIEWS By JOHN A. HEYDLER President National League NEW YORK, April 12 (AP) -As an Index of American snort stability and soundness, let me say inai Tuesday will be the National League's 65th opening day. It will also be the 30th consecutive season that the eight contending clubs will represent the same eight cities. Four of these clubs New York Pittsburgh. St. Louis and Chiearo among them have won the last nine championships. These cttntln ue to be clubs of unquestioned class. Yet so well haa the ongaae been strengthened that one or two of the leaders may be erowded out of the first dtvtrinn before the end of the 1C7 days re- quirea oy our shortened schedule. By ERNEST S. BARNARD President, The American League UH1UAGO. April 12 fAPl ine American learue raen fnr 1930 will be tighter than it ha oeen ror five years. I will he greatly surprised if the pennant winner is decided before late in September. It is doubtful if anv club will fc able to -win 100 tames. In faet. Matchmaker Harry Plant an nounced Saturday. Potter will weigh not more than 149 pounds, and Is the first opponent Anderson will have faced in many months who is not out of his weight class. Recently in Portland Potter won from Wildcat McCann, and though he won on a foul, he was proving up to that time a match for the wily Mexican. Potter is a wrestler of wide ex perience, and ig not altogether a stranger to local fans. Several years ago he wrestled Robin Reed here, and later won from Monte Christensen in the local armory. There was some talk of match ing McCann with Al Karasick, the Russian lion, but in spite of the demand for the match on the part fans who wanted -to see the murderous Portland grappler in action, Matchmaker .Plant vetoed the idea because of the disparity in weights which would not give McCann an even break. Plant proposes to bring Bob Myers of Tillamook here for a match with McCann later. 'SS A speedy city swimming team from Vancouver, Wash., defeated the Salem Y. M. C.
