drive to pass the long pending
tariff measure before the week
end. Plans were being laid for a
week's recess after passage to
catch up with their office work
and to get a little recreation from
the six and a half months of
tariff tinkering.
The vote of Senator Borah, re
publican. Idaho, defeated the
fourth attempt to transfer hides,
leathers and shoes from tke free
lut. With the amendment of
Senator Oddie, republican. Neva
da, about to carry by one Tote
Borah switched from "aye to
"no" before the result was an
nounced, making it 3$ to 35
against.
, The Oddie amendment was de
feated last week by 42 to 27. It
gaiaed the floor again when a
tuotion to reconsider, made by
Senator Herbert of Rhode Island,
carried 34 to 35, another single

Senator Borah made no ex
planation for his change of Tote.
He Las favored high protection
for hides all along, however, and
has opposed duties thus far pro
posed on leathers and shoes. Od
die i amendment would hare pro
vided higher da ties on hidee than
proposed by the house bill and
lower rates on leathers and ail
shoes except women's.
Senator Jones of Washington
won a rate of $1.5 a thousand
feet on lumber of- fir, spruce,
piae. hemlock and larch by 39
to 38. His duty of f 2 was re
jected previously, 39 to 34.

tarif ?f on oil and petroleum pro
ducts was revived in the senate to
night, and was defeated without a
record rote. A motion was agreed
to, however, that a record rote
be had tomorrow at noon with
out further debate.
The Pine amendment, defeated
yesterday after a spirited debate
by vote of 32 to 28. calls for a
duty of 4 cents a barrel on erode
oil. and : per eeat ad valorem on
gasoline and other byproducts.

versal Alliance. January 11, 19 It,
became an actuality when General
John J. Pershing presented to tho
mothers of tho world, the stately
marble building bnllt under tho
auspices of tho Mothers' Memori
al Foundation of tho women of
America. President Hoover accept
ed in the nam of the mothers,
and Senator Fess of Ohio made
the address,
Tho Idea Is that this bnUdlngr.
built to last for centuries, will
stand as a continual memorial to
the mothers of the United States
and the world. There is a room la
this building for every state in
tho Union. There is provision
made for organizations such as
tho War Mothers, the Gold Star
Mothers and sack like organiza
tions, whoso membership repre
sent women who hare glren much
in their capacity as mothers.
All the women of the world are
welcome In this building at all
times snd it will bo mado defin
itely as a meeting place for
"motherhood," regardlers of the
nation or creed. This meeting
place Is in the center of the build
ing and is called the "Hall of Ka-
tiOES."
Educational and welfare work
is planned to bo carried on with
headquarters in this memorial
building. There will bo columns
upon which will appear tho names
of illustrious mothers; pictures of
outstanding mothers will bang; on
the walls. There is to be a library
devoted to the great deed of tho
women through all ages and there
will be a national home for music
and the theatre.
Prominent women from all over
the country have been acting on
the advisory board during these
fiTe years of construction. Among;
these women Is Mrs. J. A. Carson,
of Salem, whose name was rec
ommended by Governor Pierce
during his administration.
