Not so good Thursday not

expect a lot of other people were
fooled as badly as we were.

fore we could get those boys and

ought to Luve found out by this

Salem high, Willamette or any of
the other local athletes to win if
there was anything at stake. We're
not supenstititou. as we've said

How those Salem high boys
did travel Thursday aft erno!
They had the only system that
looked anything like a fast
break, and it's jjoinu to m--. a
lot before the tournament is
oyer.
O-
But we'll pick Commerce to
beat Salem, Pendleton to beat
Astoria, North Bend to beat Dal
las, Ashland to beat Baker and
Eugene to beat Tillamook; and
we don't feel a bit safe about any
of them.
-O-
And we'll pick the Salem high
rooters to have a lot of fun. Did
you hear that outburst about "the
sweetheart of Salem high?" We
asked our neighbor who it was,
and be explained that h was the
red faced gentleman over there in
the east bleachers.
Dan McCarthy, diminutive
towel slinger, had a couple of
hunches; lie picked Pendleton
to beat Eugene, which was per
feet; bnt he was equally sure
Tillamook was going to beat
Commerce, lie felt optimistic
for a while but conceded victory
to the Stenogs between halves.
-O -
We hate to bring in anything
aside from the state tournament
while It's going so strong, but we
notice our own Johnny Beck is
getting over with a bang down in
the Ducks' training camp. He held
St. Mary's collegians scoreless for
five Innings; then some other
pitcher went in and barely kept
the collitch boys from winning.
fco long for today ; we have to
get op in the wee snia' hoars
and watch a game at 8:30. Sure
is a strenuous week for us key

STATE TOURNAMENT
SIDELIGHS
By RALPH CURTIS
The two most prominent men
in Oregon right now sat togeth
er at the tournament Thursday
forenoon and talked about bas
ketball; Governor Norblad and
Spec Keene.
Strange, the interest the col
lege coaches take in this event.
Slats Gill of O. S. C. was on
band Wednesday night and
again Thursday. Bill Reinhart
snowed up Thursday. We're
looking for Prink Callison; he
ought to feel at home at the
state tournament.
Speaking of Medford re
minds ns of the broad grins the
Astoria players wore Thursday
morning; and that doesn't ex
clude the time that Astoria was
seven points behind. Ystad and
Zimmerman, especially, grinned
and grinned. They must have
remembered the outfit that
beat them last year and tried to
emulate the Pearpickers in ev
ery way. But as we recall it,
Ystad grinned Just as consist
ently last year.
By the way, you pronounce
that name "Yoostad," to rhyme
with snoose.
. There's nothing that looks
quite so futile as a team trying
to guard all over the floor the
way Astoria and Redmond do.
It's their funeral, but it must
be awfully wearing on the con
stitution. Who remembers which play
er it was that scored the first
basket in the tournament? All
right, we'll tell you; it was
Houghton of Eugene. And B.
Smith of Redmond has the
doubtful honor of committing
the first foul.
While Houghton was run
ning up all those points. Coach
Weber told us Berg, the other
forward, was supposed to be
better than Houghton. Berg
was selected on the all-district
No. 6 quintet.
Strange, the difference be
tween Dallas' shewing against
Pendleton and against Red
mond. If we call it Btagefright,
don't consider that a slam. Lin
coln and Commerce both bad it
for a while, even such old cam
paigners. In fact, none of the
boys look any too calm when
they get out there.
There's an Eberhart on the
Eugene team as usual. Pretty
good sized boy but be must be
the runt of the family.
B. H. Conkle, president of
the Btate high school athletic
association, says the flags were
all at half mast Tuesday night

at Medford, when for the first
time in seven years a different
team was leaving to represent
district No. 4.
Several of the coaches have
been crabbing at the 20 year
age limir, mentioning that they
lost all their good players
thereby. But It doesn't seem
to have hurt Commerce. Four
of the eight boys on the Stenog
squad are wearing mustaches.
