Sutherland, head coach of foot ball at the University of Pitts burgh, received from the athletio council as a Christmas present is easily explained. The six-year record' of the Pitt Panther under Sutherland is tha answer. Since "Jock" came to Pitts burgh from hi3 coaching post at Lafayette in 1924, hero is what has happened: The prowling Panther has won 42 games, lost eight, and tied five in the regular season's play from 1924 to 1929 Inclusive. Tha scoring In that time has been 1157 points for Pitt to 228 for the opposition. Twice the Panther has gona through a nine-game schedule un defeated, in 1927 and 1929. Stars such as Glbby Welch, Mike Getto, Ralph Chase, Joe Donchess, Ray Montgomery, Tony Uansa and Tom Parkinson have been devel oped by the former Pitt star and graduate. Twice the Panther has been in vited to represent the east in tha annual Tournament of Rosea game with a Pacific Coast oppon ent at Pasadtna. Calif., the first time in 1927 and again at tha end of the past season. Sutherland was a member of the Pitt elevens of 1914, 1915, 1916 and 1917 during which tima but one football defeat was suf fered. He" took ap coaching duties at Lafayette in 1919 and during hia tire years there his teams won 34 games, lost Eeren and tied one tn play against major eastern op ponents. Sutherland's all-time coaching record over 11 years is thus: 7 victories, IB defeats, seven ties. The 11-year scoring total for tha regular season play: 2,13 1 points to 409 for the opposition.
