Sunday Morning, January 12, 1929 PAGE ELEVEN- OUT SECTION IIUEII E lOPEI WAGES O POSTER STAMPS TO ADVERTISE OREGON J By PLATIUS I. LIPSEY. JR. (Associated Press Correspondent) GENEVA ( AP) Statistical experts under J. W. Nixon.. Mond Kuelishman and head of the sta tistical department of the Inter national Labor oCfice, are prepar ing to start in January a six nouths survey of living costs in fifteen European industrial cent ers for the Ford interests of De troit. The object is to determine how ranch Henry Kord must pay work men in his European plants la o,rder to give them the ae rel a'tive. living standard. as. S enjoy ed by his employees in his home city. 'ST' To gain complete success In their work the" txrerts will need to draw on a goodf supply 'of tact. European employers have sh'own r.r enthusiasm for the Burvey. They are not at all cheerful when Mev contemplate what the ex Parts' may figure out as the old world equivalent of tho 87 a day minimum wage of Detroit. The inquiry will take in Man -eater and London In England, Cork, Ireland: Paris and Mar- sollles, France; Berlin and Frank fort, Germany; Antwerp, Belgi- i m ; Rotterdam, Holland; Hels- ingpors, Finland: Copenhagen, Denmark; Trieste and Genoa, It aly; Barcelona, Spain; Warsaw. Poland, and Istanbul (Constant! nople), Turkey. In all of these the Ford company has either built or DrODOses to build slants. The fundamental needs of food, housing, clothing, fuel and light will be examined by the experts hut they will also go into the costs of education, amusements, books, tobacco, drink and other social comforts. Like Biblical evangelists of old the experts will work in pairs. Mr. Nixon will lead a main group of a dozen specially trained inves tigators. Statistical experts of each of the countries affected will he used to supplement these in quirers and a big force of clerks will back up the fact finders. This will be largely pioneer work. The .fact that there were no comprehensive figures of this sort came to light last April when the London branch of theFVrd company asked the League of Na tions for the information. The International Labor- office of the league was able to give only a portion of the data and found It had no funds available for the widespread survey. This difficul ty was overcome, however," when the Twentieth. Century Fund, a New York organization, offered S 25.000 to cover the costs of the survey. SAFETY GLASS IN Two new medium-priced 100-l.or.-epbwer Graham eights were vn veiled by the Graham-Paige Motors corporation at the open in? of the New York automobile show as an addition to the line of two Graham sixes and two larger eights, which share witi? ti e new models in distinctive im I.rovementg in style and impor tant chassis developments. A't models now bear the name 'Gra ham" alone, and are Just as com pletely Graham In engineering rnd manufacture, for all bodies, engines, and chassis are built in Graham plants. The outstanding feature ot the Graham announcement is that l.on-shatterable safety plate glass will be used in every window, door, and windshield of all mod fl. so that every car will be com pletely armored against the haz ards of flying splinters and frag ments of glass. The Grahams are thus the first line of cars in the medium price class to adopt safe ty plate as standard equipment throughout. zAbKOWICE, Poland. (AP) The batUe craiser Hiyel, one of Japan's group of four of a type of fighting ship not represented in the United States Navy, is to be modernized in 1930. The Navy Ministry announces that she will be removed from the active list in January. Altera tiona will include additional pro tection against submarines and deck armor and will increase her displacement by 3,000 tons. The Hiyel is the last of the four sister battle cruisers to undergo such changes, which when com pleted will increase Japan's total tonnage of-capital ships by 12,000 ton 3. Renovation of the Haruna wrs completed late In 1928; .the Kirl shima has just been recommls sloned after two years La drydock, while the Kongo, which has been in the hands of the naval artific ers for a year, will be turned out late in 1930. Work on the Hiyel will contin ue two years. The cost for each VAN FLEET-DURKEE, INC I .!-, l T! These ships, commissioned be tween 1913 and 1915, hitherto have been rated as of 27,500 tons. Henceforth they will be 30,500 tons. The "Washington naval treaty permits the powers to re construct capital ships so as o increase protection against sub marine and air attack, provided the alterations do not enlarge the displacement by more than 3,000 tons. Japan is taking advantage of this provision up to the limit, The addition ot 12,000 tons to her cap ital ship total displacement brings it to 313.320. just under the limit of 315,000 allotted her by the Washington Treaty. Two of the rear shoes are Independently actuated by the hand lever. The horsepower has been increased to 50 by minor changes In the engine. Spring shackles are self-adjusting. Tho instrument panel has been re designed. Chrysler Chrysler introduced the "66." "70" and "77" in place of the "65" and "75" last of all. The "70" and "77" arc equipped with a four-speed transmission with si lent internal geared third and these two models also have the down-draft carburetor, which is said to give a 12 per cent increase in power. Just recently the power of the "C6" and the "70" has been considerably increased by enlarging the engine dimensions. The "70" now develops 93 horse- j power and the "66" yields 6S horsepower. De Soto The De Soto, a Chrysler pro duct, includes a six, which is un changed, and a new eight, which sells in the $1,000 field. The new car has a 76 h. p. L-head engine with a bore and stroke of 2 7-8 by 4 1-4. A feature of the design is a downdraft carburetor. With this construction the carburetor is mounted above the Intake man ifold Instead of below so that both air and gasoline flow down hill all the way to the cylinders. Internal hydraulic brakes are used. Bodies are attractive and are built wholly of steel. The transmission has three speeds. Dodge Dodge Brothers have four chas sis models, including two sixes coutinued without change, and In addition a new six and a new eight. It is understood that the new six will sell for considerably less than $1,000. It has an L-head engine which develops 61 horse power, a three-speed transmission internal hydraulic brakes, and an overall length with bumpers of 158 5-8 inches. The popularly priced eight is an L-head design developing 76 horsepower. It also has a three-speed transmis sion, internal hydraulic brakes, and an overall length with bump ers of 176 7-S inches. A down draft carburetor is a feature. Bodies are all-steel monopieo? construction. Durant The Durant line for 1930 con sists of two sixes. The larger six is distinguished by a four-speed transmission with silent Internal geared third and 'standard" shift. It has a. 3 3-8 4 5-8 inch L-head engine which develops 70 horsepower. The smaller six has an L-head engine 3 '4x4 inches which delivers 58 horsepower. Both lines of cars have new bod ies of attractive design. The com pany emphasizes the point that the bodies possess unnfaal strength. ,.imi, Erskine The 1930 Erskine built by Stu debaker is an entirely new de sign. Because it is described as having excessive power per pounds of weight it has been christened the "Dynamic New Er skine." It is an L-head six with a 70-horsepower engine, bore anl stroke being 34 by 4 1-8. Tha wheelbase is 114 inches. New bodies with very pleasing lines are a feature. Kssex The Essex has a more powerful six-cylinder engine, although its dimensions have not been changed. The greater power has been secured by refinements. The wheelbase has been increased 2Vi inches to 113 inches, and bodies are roomier and more at tractive. The hood, radiator and front fender designs are also more pleasing. liraham Coincident with the showing of is 1930 product the Graham- Page Motors corporation has changed the name of its passen ger cars to Graham.
