Also, it strikes as that the fig ures in our guessing record are getting a bit unwieldy. Last week we were discussing the National league records for the last season, trying to find out what they proved. We didn't set around to the pitchers. "Complete (nines pitched? Is ' a pretty fair criterion, because if n man pitches nine or more innings .' he's generally .. doing pretty fair work the way base ball is played these days. As n rule, reore balls are thrown In the bnllnen than from the bH ock, and there's n well worn oe-way path from the one to the other. Outside of a phenom named Lu cas, who. pitched: for Cincinnati and worked 28 full games, Chica go a big three, Root,-Malone and Bush, ranked among the highest the first two completing 19 and the third r Habbell of New York and Brame of .Pittsburgh each pitched 19 full games, but they had no running mates In that class. Then we notice that In addi- tlon to pitching 18 fall games. Bosh finished IS more. He took ' part in 50 games, more than any other pitcher in the league, and pitched 271 innings, allow ing 177 hits. That was the low est for any of the pitchers who pitched ten or more fall games. Bat then Bash was m trifle wild. - Mr. Malone led the league In shutouts", with five. "Average runs earned per nine inning game" is probably the best criterion of pitching, and we find Root and Malone bunched to gether in third and fourth place on that basis, with Bush seventh. They were the only Cub pitchers working as many as ten full games. Down in the list ot pitch ers who didn't qualify on that basis we find Nehf, Cvengros, Horne and Carlson, all with .500 or better averages on games won, but rather high averages on earn ed runs. Offensive work saved them. Byrfce way, we also found the . name of Lawrence' : H. French, former Albany boy,' with na average of .583 on games won. Pitched for Pitts burgh, yon know. Participated in SO games, . pitched six full ones and finished ten; 128 inn ings. Won seven and lost five. Allowed ISO base hits, gave 92 bases on balls, allowed J8 runs, 97 of them earned; allowed 4.2) ' earned runs per nine inning game. Larry held his own and then some.' Only four members of the squad showed up Monday for resump tion of practice after the Christ mas vacation, and unless the oth ers check in today, they will be decidedly rusty Wednesday night, even If they do report in time for the game. Those limbering up Monday af ternoon after a layoff of more than a week were Adams, Hook, Scales and Gibson. None of this quartet betrayed any in effects of the Christmas vacation, all proving accurate in looping the hoop, when they worked out Mon day. Members of the squad are wor rying lest Cardinal, whose home is -in the Coos Bay region, and Carpenter, who lives in Washing ton, may not have received notica that there is a game Wednesday. -If they fall to show up Willam ette's chances .will be decidedly weakened. - The- Willamette freshmen and Multnomah Intermediates will play ak preliminary game at 7:00 o'clock .Wjen'es'day night and the varsity gitae is scheduled for S o'elocK. By TED VOSBDRGH NEW YORK, Dec. 30. (AP) Speaking at a general discus sion of college and school athlet ics as described, by the Carnegie foundations famous ".Bulletin 23," Avery Brundage of Chicago, president of the Amateur Athletie union, today predicted "an era of amateur athletics that will far surpass what we already have." Agreeing that abuses exist; Mr. Brundage related how the Chica go Athletic association was forced to abandon the sport ot track and field because- of. the demands of athletes who had reeefved subsid ies at college and sought similar inducements from the dub. ''If all the hullabaloo of the football season is designed solely for the physical training of some 40 to 50 men on the squad," said Mr. Brundage, "it's all wrong it's all foolishness." The need, he declared, is for the development of a higher stan dard of amateur sportsmanship among all those connected with football add other sports, wheth er in a competitive or administra tive capacity or merely as a spec tator.
