Butler home in Monmouth Christmas eve for the 49th con secutive family reunion. Many : sections of the west were repre- ; sented, and telegrams were re- ; ceived from several family ; groups who could not be present including Rev. and Mrs. Russell Drougher, Horace Foulks, David Foulks Jr.. Mabel Clair Ground, and Harold Johnson, all of New York City, who were having a tree and reunion together in miniature facsimile Of the good old times which they formerly participated in at Monmouth, Oregon. Came West In 1849 The originator of the Butler family reunion in the west was Joseph Bradley Varnum Butler, a native of New Hampshire, whe crossed the plains with his fam ily by ox team in 1849. He was the first postmaster of Portland, Oregon, the post office being located in his general store building east of the present Portland hotel site. This build ing was also the meeting place of the first Masonic assemblage held in Portland, and so far as known in Oregon. The Butler dwelling a cabin stood wherA the present post office of Port land is located. Mr. Butler also laid the., first brick chimney for steam " that was laid in Oregon. Butler are: Mrs. Sarah Jane Ground of Portland, Mrs. TV. J. Mulkey and J. B. V. Butler, Monmouth, and Mrs. Frank F.e n t o n, McMinnville. Mrs. Ground, 80, presented the feat ure ot the evening's program in a resume of the first Christmas gathering held by the Oregon Butlers in 1852. Little pigs roasted whole were reminiscent of the days when the first But ler ancestor, a duke of Norman dy, aided William the Conqueror in the memorable battle near Hastings, 1066 A. D., and found ed the ancestral home of the Butlers in Great Britain. First Met in 1852 In the early fifties, no eandy -was obtainable in Oregon but the striped stick variety. "Knick nacks." ornaments such as we have for Christmas trees, fancy colored candles and the like were unknown in those days. Mrs. Ground mentioned that apples -were $100 per barrel; and that her father had paid $5.00 for a small Jar of preserved currants ' which graced the Christmas dinner table as a very special treat. One other person was pres ent who also attended the Christmas dinner party In 185S Mrs. Thomas Starbuck, 84, of Portland. Other program numbers in eluded the singing of Auld Lang Syne by the entire assemblage: and tableaux featuring the Ma donna and Child and Father Time. The big Christmas free from which each Butler receives his every gift was denuded br a Jolly Santa Claus; and the big ball room wherein the reunions are held conceived and lyovld ed by Joseph B. V. Butler when ' he built the house so long ago was next the scene of a cafeteria Christmas feast. Finally the room was cleared for games and dancing, with chatty corners of retreat for those who preferred to visit and reminisce. Plan Semi-Ontennial : . The oldest person present this year was Thomas Starbuck, 86, of Portland, and the youngest 1 was Lawrence Fresh, 8 months, the son xf Mr. and Mrs. Marios . Fresh of Stayton, and a great- ., great-grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. V.
