ZEN A, Dec. 27. Wayne Hen
ry returned from Lob Angeles this
week. Mrs. Mary B. Crawford, his
mother-in-law who was with Mr.
and Mrs. Henry on trip to Illinois
and California suffered a stroke
of paralysis when they reached
Los Angeles while enroute home
from the east.
Her right side was more affect
ed than the other and her heart
was Tery irregular. After reaching
home Mr. Henry received a mes
rage from his wife saying that
her mother's condition was serious
but a later message received
Thursday stated that her heart
was more regular and general
condition better.
W. Frank Crawford, son of Mrs.
Mary B. Crawford, with Mrs.
Crawford and heir children drove
to Los Angeles starting from Sa
lem Friday and reaching, their
destination Monday.
TRAVELS THROUGH SNOW
ORCHARD HEIGHTS. Dec. 27.
Terrill Cardwell arrived here Mon
day evening from Morton, Wyom
ing. He made the trip in a truck
and reports that he traveled over
a continuous blanket of snow all
the way from Wyoming to Pend
leton, Ore. Mr. Cardwell brought
his family west last Summer, then
returned to Wyoming to dispose
of his stock, implements and so
forth. He has not yet determined
In Just what part of Oregon he
wishes to settle. He would like to
rent or lease a stock or dairy
farm. Mr. Cardwell says the
green land" looks good to him

SCOTTS MILLS, Dee. 28. The
yster supper sponsored by the
P. T. A. Thursday evening at the

After supper the high school boysj
basket ball team played the Leslie

JACKSON, Ky., Dec. 27 (AP)
Chester Fugate, who was taken
from the Breathitt county Jail
Christmas morning and shot and
beaten, died late today after he
had accused six men of being the
leaders in the latest shedding ot
blood by members of the Fugate
and Watkins families.
BOMB KILLS WORKER
JERUSALEM, Dec. 27. (AP)

Moses Katz, a 'workman in the
colony of Petach Tikvab, was
killed by the explosion of a bomb
while working in his fields today.
The bomb was left over from war
days in Palestine.

For Cottage Farm Group
The American Lutheran church
chorus, which presented "The
Story Wonderful" as one of the
most spectacular of the Christmas
pageants, will give the pageant at
the Cottage Farm Sunday after
noon at 2:30 'clock. Persona
participating In the production
number 110. William McGilchrist,
Sr., directed the music and Max
Gehlar directed the pageant.

Has Excellent
Yule Program
TURNER, Dec. 27. A full
house enjoyed the Christmas eve
program at the Christian church
Tuesday evening. The theme was
"The Birth and Life of Christ,"
told in prophecy, story and song.
The program opened with or
chestral music by the Fowler
brothers with Mrs; Hatfield at the
piano.
"Sing Unto Jehovah" was given
by a large chorus, followed by
prayer. The junior chorus gave
"Silent Night." Reading. "The
Child Jesus," Gertrude Cook. The
"Story of the Nativity," was given
by Rachel Riches. Solo by Mhs
Ailine Robertson, "While Shep
herds Watched." Bible reading by
Miss Leone Cook. Song by chorus.
Bible reading by Walter Peterson
and Charles Standley. Solo. "To
day the Prince Is Born," by Es
mond Patton.
"Beautiful Story of Jesus" was
sung by the chorus. Orchestral
music, Mrs. Earl Cook at the
piano. Little Lois Jensen of Port
land gave a very pleasing recita
tion.
Rev. Gilstrap spoke of the joys
of the season and the joy of giv
ing. An offering was taken for
the "Turner Boys Home." Bene
diction. The treats were passed r.t
the close of the program.
The program was arranged by
Mrs. F. C. Delzell. Miss Lillian
Peterson in costume presided and
gave the numbers of the program
introducing each part.
Amity Pioneer
Passes Away
AMITY, Dec. 27 John R.
Caves who has been a resident
of Amity for several years, died
at the home of bis aon, John.
Mr. Caves was past 7( years of
age afld was born near Hopewell.
Interment will be held In the
Hopewell cemetery Saturday at 2

Evangelist L. A. Mead to
Conduct Campaign at
Evangelical Church
An old-fashioned revival cam
paign will be opened at 11 o'clock
Sunday morning, December 19, at
the First Evangelical church, cor
ner of Center and Liberty streets,
and will continue through Jan
uary 19, with Rev. Lawrence A.
Mead, the evangelist lately from
Oklahoma, in charge.
. Rev. A. P. Layton, pastor of the
church, says:
"Immediately following Christ
mas services is an Ideal time to
begin an old fashioned revival
campaign; one that eliminates
Santa Claus and promotes Christ
to the pre-eminence He should en
joy; a meeting with a message
that still rings true, not tinted In
any way with modernistic doc
trines or the evolution of man
kind from the so-called tree climb
ing ancestor.
"Evangelist Mead will bring
such messages. He is a dynamic
speaker, with a subject that is ba
sic, as is evidenced by the results
of his past many meetings through
which he has been rewarded with
many souls. He will be assisted by
his brother who will conduct the
song service, sing solos and have
charge of the young people and
children's work."
Epworth League Planning
Watch Night Observance
The First church chapter of the
Epworth League of First Metho
dist church will sponsor a watch
night party and service In the
church parlors on Tuesday eve
ning, beginning at 8:30 o'clock.
The members of the University

Former Pastor Sunday
TURNER. December 2. Rev.
M. A. Groves of the West Salem
Ford Memorial church, will preach
Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at
the M. E. church in the absence of
the pastor. Rev. Groves was pas
tor of the local church two years
and his many friends will be glad
of the opportunity to hear him
preach next Sunday.
Calvary Baptist Board
Will Meet Monday Night
The official board of the Cal
vary Baptist church will hold its
regular meeting Monday evening
at 7:30 o'clock. The orchestra will
meet for rehearsal Tuesday eve
ring at 7:30 o'clock and Thursday
night the choir will have a rehear
sal. There will be no prayer meetr
ing Wednesday flight.
Amity to Have
New Gas Station
AMITY. Dec. 27. Surveyors
were here this week locating a
site for a service station. This is
to be at the corner of Trade and
Madox streets. This station will be
put in by an oil company.
The property is occupied now
by an old barn which will be torn
down. It is also rumored that the
Christian church has leased the
grove in the rear of their church
building for a service station and
cabins. This property is at the end
of the bridge on the west side of
the highway on the south part of
town.

PRATUM, Dec. 27. The can
tata given at the Menonite church
under the direction of Rev. J. M.
Franz, by the local choir of 40
voices, was more than a commun
ity affair. A large delegation at
tended from Dallas and Salem,
and other places were represented
by smaller groups. The Metho
dist church was closed for the
evening, bringing the attendance
up to over 300. Miss Elda Herr
played the piano while Miss
Lichty and Clarence Herr each
played saxophones.
ULL DAY'S EMS
TURNER, Dec. 26 Next Sun
day will be a high day at Turner
Church of Christ. The choir will
have an anthem for the morning
sermon. Dr. H. C. Epley will lead
the song service, which will be
followed by a New Year's sermon

At the close of this service all
will go to the social hall and la
ter to the dining room for a good
fellowship basket dinner. Hot
drinks will be served from the
kitchen. After lunch the annual
church meeting will be held with
reports, and election ot officers.
The every member canvass which
is now being made is showing a
fine and unanimous spirit among
the members.
The subject of tbe evening
sermon will be "The Goal of Your
Life." The Christian Endeavor
will be led by the two groups of
nominated candidates. The elec
tion of the new officers will take
place at the church New Year's
eve, at a business meeting, fol
lowed by a watch party. Next Sun

prayer meeting promises to be
one of much Interest.

Three Ford Memorial
Boards to Meet Monday
A number of meetings are plan
ned for Monday evening by groups
of the Ford Memorial Community
church, West Salem. At 7 o'clock
the Sunday school board will meet,
followed by the official board ses
sion at 7:4 5 o'clock and the board
of stewards meeting at S : 30
o'clock.
The boy scout troop sponsored
by the church will meet Tuesday
night at 7 o'clock, with Ray Fer
guson acting as scoutmaster. Fol
lowing the business session, there
will be volleyball games, otber
athletics, a program, refreshments
and a religious service closing at
midnight. Wednesday night choir
practice will be held, beginning at
8:16 o'clock, and Thursday the
church boys will practice volley
ball at 7 o'clock.
