Edward L. Greene, general
manager of the National Better
Business bureau, says that local
bureaus are now operating in New
York, Chicago, Philadelphia, De
troit, Boston. St. Louis, Cleveland,
and 40 other principal cities. Each
bureau is an independent corpor
ation governed and financed by
its respective comnrunity. .
The national bureau, with head
quarters hi New Tork, handles
cases of financial legerdemain and
deceptive advertising on a nation
al scale. The local bureaus oper
ate exclusively within their re
spective metropolitan areas,, . ,
Their work Is coordinated
throughout the nation, and
through their membership In an
organisation known as the Affili
ated Better Business Bureau.
Kenneth Barnard, manager of the
Detroit bureau, is president of the
affiliated group. ,
A. C. Fuller is president of the
national bureau. The national and
local bureaus operate along the
same general lines except in tha,
extent of territory covered.
The bureaus have two main di
visions, commerce and finance.

advertisers are exposed.
The financial department sup
plies firms and the investing pub
lic facts on enterprises which sell
securities, real estate, goods or
services. It submits evidence ot
fraud to governmental agencies.
When the federal trade commis
sion summoned publishers of peri
odicals to discuss means of purg
ing their pages of untruthful ad
vertising, the publishers designat
ed the National Better Business
bureau to assist them by setting
up an Investigating and reporting
service.
Mr. Greene says that the bue
reau has conducted a similar ser
vice for classified managers ot
newspapera 'the last seven years.
