We are Informed that the dif
ficulty which set Columbia U.
back a year in getting recognition
by the Northwest conference, was
simply its failure to send out elig
ibility lists before each game.
Sounds technical, but that's where
a lot of trouble starts.
Willamette has quite a batch
of home basketball games
scheduled. Oregon State will be
here January 4, Linfield the
25th, Pacific February 7, Col
lege of Paget Sound Febru
ary 14 and 15, College of Idaho
February 20 and 21. There will
be some other games, not yet
signed up.
But from present appearances,
this isn't the year for Willamette
to knock over any coast confer
ence teams, even if it should
prove able. The games with Ore
gon State are too early, and Ore
gon hasn't condescended to play
the Bearcats. It handed Willam
ette the same line it got from the
California schools about football
games "no open dates."
Before we forget it, let's pick

Veterans Feed Ball to Wil
lamette Star Who Gets
Two Dozen Points
With Dwlght Adams, all-northwest
conference forward and Wil
lamette university star, looping
the basket from every angle to
gather a ..total of 24 points, the
Salem high alumni hoop team de
feated Coach Hollis Huntington's
Salem quintet by the score of 35
to 31 In the annual alumni-high
echool game played here Friday
night.
But it took a last quarter rally
on the part of the alumni tossers
to win the game. The Salem fire
held the lead at tHe end of the
half 20 to 12 and also at the close
of the third canto when the score
stood 26 to 23 for the preppera,
Huntington injected three of his
substitutes in the last frame and
these players were unable to cope
with the experienced array of
alumni stars.
Good Prospects for
Strong Team Seen
Salem's prospects for a winner
this season look unusually good if
the performance of the team last
night is a criterion of their play
li coming league games. The com
bination of Kitchen and Pettit at
forwards; Graber at center;, and
Sanford and 'Satchler at guards
seemed, to be the best early-season
five that the high school has placed
upon the floor for several seasons
past.
While the team has yet to learn
plenty, it has potential strength
in these five players. Huntington's
work will be to develop reserve
strength as there seems to be a
dearth of material available this
year. Ray Graber at center played
a fine game Friday and should be
outstanding if he keeps up the
work. He outjumped both John
Drager and Homer Lyons, former
Salem star pivot men, and was
following in on every shot. Graber
was also evident in offensive play
and time and again broke down
the eenter of the floor to pass or
shoot for the net. He was in the
open on several occasions but did
not prefer to shoot, passing the
ball to his forwards instead. A
few games experience and he
should be a high scorer.
Prepper's Defense
Caught off Guard
The Salem defense showed
strength at times but the guards,
especially Bob Kelly, pulled out
of position to play the floor a bit
too much and when the ball was
lost to the alumni they failed to
form a defense 'soon enough to
stop a score. Kelly tallied some
nice long shots in the first half
but did not connect during the
second half.
Little can be said of the alum
ni play. The players, all former
high school stars, played a nice
passing game. Adams seemed to
get into the open regularly and he
was fed by the other players. The
game was unusually clean for a
game of this character and no
player was ejected from the eon
test because of too many personal
fouls.

Mr. Sparks said, athletic authori

The baseball schedule will be
worked out separately by officials
of the east and west divisions of
the conferences, but the playoff
between char pions of the two di

and is to be held this year on the
west side, probably in the city
where the west side champion col

The conference track meet will
be held at Walla Walla May 29

Aside from a reading of the

Columbia university's failure to
