She ' was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Chandler, was hem in Salem and lived here until a year ago. She attended the Grant and Highland-schools, and had entered Washington high at Portland. Death was caused by complica tions, following an acute attack of intestinal influenza. Interment services were held at the Portland Crematorium Monday. Wemme appealed from an order of Judge Robert G. Morrow of the Multnomah county circuit court la which Morrow ruled that Wem me's claim of immunity from ar rest and imprisonment was not ustified. Judge Morrow found that Wemme was detained legally and by virtue of an execution oa final Judgment In the case of How ard Sutherland, federal alien prop erty custodian, against Edward Wlckey Dow W. Walker and August Wemme. Wemme has fur nished $25,000 bond pending dis position of the case in the supreme court. - The circuit court awarded udgment against the defendants in the amount of '$67,545.80. Wickey was an agent of Suther land. It was charged that Walker and Wemme conspired with Wickey with the understanding that Wickey was to purchase stoek in the E. Vaccination as Compulsory Idea Is Not Allowed The state board of higher edu cation ha? no authority to pass a resolution making vaccination for smallpox compulsory in any insti tution over which it has control, according to an opinion handed down by the attorney general Thursday. The attorney general held, how ever,, that the state board of health acting directly, or through the local county boards of health, has power to enforce vaccination at any of the institutions of high er learning in case of an epidemic or threatened epidemic. The opinion was requested by A; R: Watzek, acting secretary for the state board of higher educa tion. Newspaper Way Cracking Safe Held All Wrong Harry Schmidt and Raymond Carr, who arrived at the state penitentiary here Tuesday to serve terms for burglary at Grants Pass, never again will accept a newspa per formula for safe-cracking. Schmidt told the prison offi cials that while in Grants Pass few days ago he read a safe crackl ing formula in a Portland newspa per. That night he and Carr en tered a store and attempted to put the formula into practice. The formula proved a "flop," Schmidt said, with the result that his hand was blown off. L. Collins Reelected Mast er of Local Grange at Gervais GERYAIS, December 5. One hundred were present Tuesday evening at the meeting of Fair field Grange which was held at the Masonic halL Only two of a large number of candidates pre sented themselves for initiation and these were given the work by the team from Monitor.' Several ears of members of the Monitor grange, accompanied the team. After the meeting a basket sup per was served, the dining room being filled twice. This meeting was a follow-up of the Fairfield grange meeting of last Wednesday night when the generous offetvof VT. A. Ditmar was accepted and officers for next year were elect ed.
