fJew Brakes Fully Enclosed,
Excluding Mud and
Water
Following several years of re
search General Motors Corpora
tion has Introduced a new type
or brake on the 130 Balck.
Bales, first among automobiles to
adopt four-wneel brakes, eontln
aed wltnthe external type nntil
the receat perfection of this new
enclosed unit, which its engia
eers pronounce superior to any
braking system yet evolved.
Being fully enclosed the new
Buick brakes exclude all mad and
.water and in addition afford sev
eral entirely new features elim
inating all of the early difficul
ties with eselsed Brakes.
Locking of wheels at high
speed, the engineers point oat.
baa been totally eliminated in the
new Buick brake, as has heating
of drums and amplification of
brake noises. No lining has yet
been developed which will not
score brake drums, but the new
Buick minimizes this by substitut
lng a lead plate for a part of the
lining. i
These new brakes are the two
shoe, cam operated type, bat with
the self-energizing front shoe at
tached to the hub plate by a fork
ed link rod, the articulated mount
ing preventing excessive self-ener
Sizing and thus eliminating lock
ing of wheels.
" Coiled wire spring? are wound
eround the outside of the drums
and this ingenious dwice not only
assists in keeping the drums cool
!ut absorbs brake noise3 which
drums otherwise tend to amplify
Buick brakes can now be nsed on
lone hills without overheating.
The plat; fused with the
lining is alloyed oWy sufficiently
to permit, its being attached to
the shoe and holding its shape
while wearing down with the lin
ing. It contains graphite and
prevents scoring by applying this
lubricating film to the drum.
There are two entirely separate
sets of brakes operating on the
same drams on tb. rear wheels,
one pair being foot controlled and
the other emergency.
Braking effort is divided equal
ly between front and rear wheels.
Brake rods are mounted in self
aliRnins bcarinzs. All operating
parts are included in the chassis
lubricating system, with easily
accessible grease gun connections.
Buick's new brakes are reputed
to be not only mechanically per
(fect. hut to etop the cars easily
! and quickly under aTl speeds and

C INCINNATI ( AP ) There'll
be big times on the broad Ohio
this month.
Antong the celebrants, who will
mark man's dominion of the riv
er which once ran itself and com
merce as nature saw, will he
President Hoover.
Harnessed to man's will by a
vatem of 49 locks and dams the
water way will be inaugurated as
n imnraved hiETiway of com
merce. stretching from Pittsburgh
tn Cairo. 111.
The celebration, scheduled for
the middle of October, marks the
completion of a project started In
1910 and costing more tnan hb,
000,900. The secretary of war. James w.
Good, will sound the beginning of
celebration with an adaress in
Pittsburgh when an inaugural
flt starts at the Ohio's head
water, where the Allegheny and
Monogahela rivers Join, to wena
its way to the Mississippi.
President Hoover will join the
the celebrations here, marking the
occasion with an address and
cruising with the fleet on a one
dav loumev to Louisville.
President Hoover will Jojin the
celebrants here, marking the oc
easion with an address and cruia-
Ine with the fleet on a one-day
lournev to Louisville.
The President will find a river
vastly changed from the rip-roar
ing boisterous Ohio of 109 years
ago.
For many years the Ohio river
"La Belle Rivler," as the French
called it, was the center of bus-i
lness and social life ana tn main
means of travel in this section of
the country. With tht coming of
the railroad, the popularity of the
river rapidly died away.
Now. with many new barges
operating and with the Interest
in freight transportation oy wax
er picking up, the Ohio Is coming
back Into its own, rivermen Bay.
But the old days, the pictnresqne
days, apparently, are gone for
ever. The 963-mile bulk of the river
now has a well-behaved ehannel
nine feet In depth the year
around. There will be continu
ous navigation at all times ex
cept when interrupted by floods
or ice.
. The series of, locks follows a
general pattern of 'having the
chambers lie feet wW and
feet long. The river la divided
into four sections under the im
mediate supervision and direction
of army engineers in Pittsburgh.

tire is Just pressing sufficiently on the ess to hold it upright. After

curb without cracking the shell. The demonstration revealed not only hair-line braking power but also
the facility for quick manipulation.

CHIIDRBJ SURPRISE
EUlEfiS WITH FAIR
GREELET. Colo. - (AP) - An
adage that decreed children
should be teen and not heard was
given a severe jolt by the rising
generation of Weld county this
month.
For rears they have Tied for
Junior honors at the county fair
conducted by their parents and
were distarbed this year when
their timorous elders decided not
to tackle a fair, haunted by the
lurking fear that it would not
prove successful.
For a time It seemed that the
d that the
ie edict of
bored with
children must accept the edict of
their parents with the
meekness expected of adolescents,
but then things began
The hours they had labored
their livestock and farm crops
1
must not go for naught, they told
the county superintendent
schools and the county agricultur
al agent, and the two officials
agreed.
The appeals set the wheels In
motion for an organization that
conducted a successful junior fair
September 10 and 11 on the Is
land grove fairgrounds. It drew
4.000 children from the county
with exhibits of their agricultural
prowess that excited the admira
tion of their elders. Admission
was free.
It was field day for the chil
dren, who created a world of their
own where they reveled In their
accomplishments. Agricultural ex
hibits were brought by the truck
load from distances as great as
100 miles. They ranged from
purebred livestock to sugar beets.
Victory in competition brought
a reward In the form of premiums
and prizes given by local mer
chants and eitirens.
