FIGHT BETS HOTTER
OVER TIFF BILL
By D. HAROLD OLIVER
Associated Press Staff Writer
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30
(AP) Contending factions in the
senate dispute over retention in
the tariff bill of the seven-year-old
policy of permitting the presi
dent to change customs duties,
continued to express confidence of
success Saturday after a round of
conferences.
The senate took a day off for
the first time since It began con
sideration of the Ilawley-Smoot
measure three weeks ago and all
groups, realizing the influence a
victory will have for their respec
tive causes, were bending their
energies to corral all possible
votes.
Republican leaders, backed by
President Hoover in their efforts
to keep the flexible principle in
the bill, reiterated they had
enough votes to win when the is
sue Is decided this week. Demo
cratic chieftains countered with
the claim that they had sufficient
strength to repeal the provision.
They were supported in this view
by the republican independents
who share their sympathies on the
question.

Is that all you paid for this . . . ?
Where did you ever find these . . . ?
Why, it costs me nearly twice that much!
Do tell me where you get them for that!
How do you ever manage so well on so little?
But, aren't they awfully expensive?.
