ANGORA, Turkey (AP) The hard-earn&d Rasters of hard-up Constantinople citizenry will be splurged upon no triumphal ar ches to welcome Ghail Mustapha Kemal this year. The Gharl" can celled hia annual summer visit to the city of the Golden Horn, and will remain throughout the Bum mer, according to an official re port, in this hot and dusty cap ital. No reasons were given official ly for this change In the presi dent's usual program, but unof ficially two explanations are bruited about. One is that the Ghazi cannot reform his citizens out of their expensive custom of staging huge demonstrations of welcome whenever he leaves An gora. Constantinople, for Instance. has been in the habit of spending hundreds of thousands of liras ev ery summer to string the Bosphor us with electric lights, erect doz ens of triumphal arches and in dulge in other extravagant fal-de- dals to dorn herself for the great man's coming. Now, with hard times pinching the people after three successive years of drought and crop failures, the Ghazi. it is reported, wishes no extravagant receptions staged for him, and the only way he can pre vent these) demonstration! Is to stay at home. Another reason suggested for his determination to eschew the cool breezes ot the Bosphorus, is hig desire to prove by personal ex ample that the town which he has made Into the nation's capital is habitable all the year round, not withstanding the usual speedy ex odus during the summer ot for eigners and Turks alike. All Quiet on the Western Front (Continued from Page 8.) are at least a hundred. "That's a good preparation for the offensive," says Mailer, as tonished. "They're for us." growls Deter- Ing. 'Don't talk rot," says Kat to him angrily. "You be thankful If you get so much as a coffin, ' grins Tjaden. "They'll slip you a waterproof sheet for your old Aunt Sally of a carcass." The others Jest, too, unpleasant jests, but what else can a man do the coffins are really for us. The organization surpasses Itself in that kind of thing. Ahead ot ns everything Is aim mering. The first night we try to get our bearings. When It Is fair ly quiet we can hear the trans ports behind the enemy lines roll ing ceaselessly nntil dawn. Kat say they do not go back bat are bringing up troops troops, muni tions and shells. The English artillery has been strengthened, that we can detect at once. There are at least four mors batteries of twenty-fires to the right ot the farm, and behind the poplars they hare put In trench mortars. Besides these they hare brought up a number of those little French beasts with Instantaneous fuses. We are in low spirits. After we hay been in the dug-outs two hours our own shells begin to fall In tne trench. This is the third, time in four weeks. If it were simply a mistake in aim no one would say anything, but the truth Is that the barrels are worn out. The shot are often so tin certain that they land within our own Jlaes. Tonight two ot our men were wounded by them. (To b continued) TODAY'S WORD f A TTT peA TT to a Trtas-sr A T ATTIC. S ATTLE. mm m AND CUTS EXPENSES TKCOPIG AFTER lERO Vast Changes and Improve ments Noted in Gov ernment By PRISCIIXA RINO Associated Press Correspondent ANGORA, Turkey. (AP) The Influence of the United States Is replacing, almost entirely without the cognkance of .Americans, the traditional cultural influence of France and the ethical effects of the Koran in the new Turkey. The young rerublic which has weathered so many tidal waves ot reform is now to be launched up on a new sea ot transformation. That sea the Kemallst govern ment calls "Americanise.' The order which Angora has just given for the teaching of English in all Turkish schools beginning with this autumn, points significantly toward the trend away from French cultural domination In Turkey. One of the foremost spokesmen of the government and closest friends of President Kemal, the deputy Fallh Rifkl Bey, has Just written in the official daily "Mill iett": In a nation where nature, cities, science, knowledge, and men all need to be made over anew and such a nation is ours Americanism and not Euro peanism must serve as the basis for reform. The first step is to be a wide dissemination of the Eng lish language, for to adopt the American spirit we must change not only our methods of produc tion but also our sysetm of educa tion. "The habit, imbued ""through education, of considering every thing from the point of prosper ity, the ideal of gain, the ambi tion to create all. In short, that signifies Americanism, constitutes the antipodes of what our der vishes and priests have been teaching us for centuries, and it is towards this antipodo that we must now swerve or die of stag nation. "The literate Turk has been mooning away in the marshes of this ancient education of ours. , Hence he Is afraid to look far and long, afraid to lift his hands to break hard ground while all the time the one thing he docs Is to talk too much. "The religion of Americanism must come to us as the one true religion because its ideal is to create. The American God loves not the parasite who dies of hun ger in the street, but the Ford who labors and who out of his la bor builds himself a palace." It was on his return from a trip to South America that Falih Rifki Bey, who has also traveled throughout Europe, first began his campaign for Americanism, based on his observation of the ascendency of United States in fluence in Latin America and the material advancement resulting therefrom. Now his campaign has become the campaign of the Turkish government. The recent -oyage of Rebik Bey, the first member of the Turkish cabinet to risH the United States, is a case in point. Writing of the hygiene minister's return, the Americanizing deputy goes on to say: America Is a country which instead of discouraging with its own tremendous development men of backward nations, gives them a sudden awakening and a great hope. A European century is an American year. With money and with method these Americans hare triumphed over time. In creased production will give ns the money, and from America we must learn the method. The Americanization of Turkish mentality means that the United States will replace France as the predominant foreign cultural in fluence. France was the first Christian power to send an ant- basador to the Ottoman empire. and this early intimacy datinr baek to the reigns ef Francis I. ana tne Sultan. Suleiman the Magnificent in the ISth century was developed continually. French has been the foster-mother tonga of all educated Turks. French literature, and art have served as models for Turkish writers aad artists and French styles In dress and cookery have been predom inant. The official voice which now cries down these influences ot the past has drowned another less potent cry of a lesser deputy editor. Nedjmeddine Sadik. who hag been citing in his organ "Ak- scham" the perils of the Ameri- canism whose advent Falih Rifkl Bey n heralding. "The tree penetration across our borders ot the Ameriacn vir us," Sadik Bey writes. "Is replae- ' ing traditional Turkish virtue with a get-rich-quick-at - any - price mentality. Our schools must com bat this peril by emphasizing the lives of great and simple men to whom the mind was everything and material wealth nothing. We must show oar children the com parative value of the life of an American millionaire), and the life of a Socrates, a Pasteur, as Amundsen." But Sadik Bey's is only a smaU voice. The Turkish government has voted en the side of the mil lionaire. LEIPZIO (AP) Printers and publishers of this city, finding that their annaal book fair this autumn attracted little notice, have voted to discontinue the event and to move their headquar ters to Berlin. This ends Leipzig as the book center ot Germany. fr HAVANA CAP) The Board 0f Aldermen has passed an ordinance providing that finger prints most be .taken of all bodies brought te the municipal morgrre.
