DURANT SIX VISITS
S
Motorists who love their west
and wish to know more about its
early history should not let an
other season go by without tour
ing California's Sierra wonder
land, famed for its assoolation
with Mark Twain and Bret Harte
inthe days when gold was to be
bad for the digging.
Ghost cities now dot the land
scape, but the old timers are loyal
to the scenes of former .glories
and towns like Mokelumne Hill
still continue their active exist
ence. The motorist interested in see
ing this historic country. can turn
back the pages of history as was
clone recently by a party in a Dur
ant Six-Sixty-Six sedan one of
Jhe latest Durant creations re
cently introduced with four for
ward speeds. Starting from the
western Durant plant in Oakland,
Calif., the scout party selected
the Tunnel Road in Berkeley and
the oBrden highway to Stockton.
From Stockton the route lies
over good highways through the
old town of Lock ford and Cle
ment to Valleyl 'Springs. From
Valley Springs it is only 11 miles
to Mokelumne Hill, which was a
roaring metropolis in the early
fifties. Shortly after gold was
discovered in California in 1849,
rich placer diggings were found
near Mokelumne Hill and here
was built one of California's earl
iest and richest mining commun
ities. The town now boasts of hav
ing the oldest threestory build
ing standing in California. It or
iginally was a WellsFargo ex
press office and still has solid
iron doors and iron shutters on
all three "floors, this precaution
being necessary in the early days
to protect the gold that was
stored there against robbers.
'All around Mokelumne Hill are
the remnants of the old placer
workings which poured untold
wealth Into the pcokets of miners
more than half a century ago and
which helped to make prosperous
the 34 saloons and gambling
halls whlc hwere an outstanding
town.

De Soto Six has broken all sales records for a first-year car. J The
De Soto Six was not designed merely to carry people in passable

Soto true distinction are all supplementary to its mobility. Q De Soto
Six has style, stability, speed, smoothness. It is flexible to a degree
never before achieved in a car of its price. Its comfort and luxury of

by weatherproof internal -expanding four-wheel hydraulic brakes.
