M31-J 7-14-21-23 BOSfDIiRIIICD'f (Continued from Paw 1.) The forest service, highway commissioners said, discovered it has a surplus of 387,000. and the commission, bureau of public roads and forest service distribut ed it by arranging to apply part ot the east section of the forest on the Fremont highway, using some tor co-operation on the Alsea road and surveying the Camas Prairie section of the rendleton-John Day road. Central Oregon Highway Going Ahead Swiftly A delegation from Harney coun ty complained that the commission is not doing much on the Central Oregon highway. The delegation was informed that there are three contracts now underway .between Bend and Burns '.and the commis sion supposed it was going ahead swiftly. The delegation then explained they objected to making detours around the Jobs where the con tracts were being worked as the old road is being cut up and de- touring in the sage brush is dusty. The Burns delegation asked the commission to contribute money toward paving tbe main street of that city. It developed that Burns had made a contract without con sulting the highway commission. The city, according to the delega tion, sold ?100,000 bonds, but that the concern buying the bonds dict ated the selection of the paving contractor thereby eliminating competition. The city council of Burns, ac cording to the delegation, did not accept the bid of the lowest bidder but accepted the bid of the con ractor favored by the bond par chaser. The legal advisor of the highway, commission could not co operate with them and said that his opinion would be that the Burns contract was not valid. ' From the southern end of Har ney county a delegation asked that new roads be placed on the map. Sheepmen between Princeton and Denio, on the Nevada line, signed a petition asking for a road. The settlers complained that the coun ty court is more concerned in get ting a road from California and Montana than in helping the sooth enders. The commission was left to draw Its own conclusion. A score or more men and women from Hillsboro and Forest Grove asked for a new road to parallel the present highway from the Can yon road to Forest Grove. Tbe dist ance is about 12 miles and SO per cent of the right of way has al ready been donated. Avother delegation asked that the Walker road be pnt on the map instead of the commission spending the money on a 100 foot super highway paralleling one al ready In use. It was explained the Walkers-road could lead over to Wilson river wlCre a road conld b built as a short cut to Tillamook. EHYBOIIS IWf POLICE PORTLAND.
