The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon, Wednesday llaraiag. Jane 26, 1929 PAGE SEVEN TO BE PUSHED "Completion of Routes Now on State Map is First Job" - Sawyer Completion of all the roads officially placed on the state highway map before nndertaklng any new' projects has been set as a policy of the state highway com mission; Robert W. Savryer, mem ber of the commission, told the Salem chamber of commerce Mon day noon in explaining the road map of Oregon a3 it was being de veloped by the highway commis sion. Of the 4300 miles of road plac d the state map slightly more than SO miles are .as yet unde Teloped,, said the speaker. These reads Include part3 of the Roose velt highway, Freemoot highway. Pendleton-John Day highway as well as the Willamette and San tiam cro3-monntaln roads. Widened Roads Needed Mr. Sawyer ,&aid that the road program of Oregon could never be considered closed due not alone to the constant demand for new roads but also to the fact that present roads would need to be widened, straightened and the grades improved. Oregon as a pioneer In road de velopment had suffered. the speaker showed, from too rapid development of its program in early days before present traf fic requirements made their de mands. The speaker went Into detail to explain the sources of revenue for the $12,000,000 annual re ceipts of the state highway eom mlslon. Of this amount, $4,750 -000 comes annually from the 3 cent gas tax. $1,185,000 from fed eral aid road funds and $550,000 from "forest funds" appropriated by the United States government for the construction of roads and trails through public lands in Oregon. Bond Issues Go Down The speaker said Oregon's ex penditure for its roads had amounted to $120,00e,000 of which more than $41,000,000 had been provided for by bond Issues. Of these issues, slightly more than $39,009,000 are out standing with the maximum re tirement charges to be reached next year when $3,343,000 will be required to meet bond retire ment charges and interest. The judge was asked by Gover nor Patterson, who Introduced him. to explain the desert type of highway proving popular in eastern Oregon. Mr. Sawyer de scribed this as a type of road which was very efficiently and steadily constructed In eastern Oregon due to the excellent cli matic conditions there prevailing as well as the easy grading possi bilities. Such a road can be constructed for $2000 to $2500 a mile, the speaker said. Roy Klein, secretary of the state highway commission and other members of the road high way staff at the statehouse, at tended the meeting.
