hORTHWEST WHEAT
LESS THAN III 1
A two and one-half per cent de
cline in Pacific northwest winter
wheat prospects during the month
of May, with a slight increase in
the United States prospects is in
dicated by June 1 crop conditions,
says F. L. Kent, statistician, U. S.
department of agriculture.
The estimate for the Pacific
northwest totals 49,378,000 bush
els as of June 1 compared with
50,689,000 bushels estimated as
of May 1, 1929. The Pacific
northwest harvested crop for 1928
was 66,176,000 bushels, and the
five year average Is 51,423,000
bushels. No estimates have yet
been issued on spring, wheat acre
age hence production estimates are
not available. Some of the pri
vate crop estimators are of the
opinion that the U. S. spring wheat
acreage for 1929 will be some
what less than the 1928 acreage.
The low condition of the Pacific
northwest winter wheat crop is
due principally to shortage of rain
fall. - A very dry fall delayed seed
ing and the crop got a poor start.
The spring has also been dry over
much of the wheat belt with be
low normal temperatures. Many

of these will not be available un
til the end of thenonth.
The total of these permits, not

to be7 large, as according to pres

month's figures.
First 2 Weeks Strong
After June had set a new re
cord for the year In Its first two
weeks, actual building permits
dropped to an extremely low fig
ure in the third . week of the
month, the total being only 14.
650. That brought the month's
figure up to $154,097, which In
dicates fewer small projects than
have been started In recent
months, since a large share of
that figure Is accounted for In
the one large project, the Pacific
Telephone and Telegraph com
pany building.
But while a. permit was issued
for this buildin. there was an
even greater amount of new con
