May 10 (AP) Watchful waiting today characterized the attitude of coun ty officials toward tbe tax crisis In ths the Klamath district. Prin cipal mill operators, and timber holders have refused to pay their taxes for the first half of 1929, and axe said, to be contemplating filing suit in federal court at taching the county budget. Ths tlmbermen appeared before the board of equalization last fall and asked for a 25 per cent re duction in taxes. They indicated they would refuse to pay their taxes and would seek relief in court In event the request was de nied. The board refused to extend tbe relief asked. Spokesmen for mill operators and timber owners say the bud get will be attacked on the grounds that it exceeds the six per cent limitation. They allege that tha budget board neglected includ ing in Its budget unexpended bal ances and other sources of income, Including Oregon and California grant land tax refunds, forest ser vice timber sale receipts, delin quent taxes and state automobile tax receipts. Severa! companies are not in eluded in the attack on the budget and in the refusal to pay taxes. Those who already paid taxes in clude the Algoma Lumber com pany, the Forest Lumber company, 11 of the smaller mills, and J. J. Stelger, timberman. County officials today expressed tbe hope that some adjustment SALEM GBANG E IS IWITED TO MEET Salem Grange No. 17 has been Inrited to attend the Butteville grange meeting Saturday, begin ling at 10:30 o'clock, reports Miss thel Fletcher, secretary of the local grange. Evening Star Grange of Portland will be at Butteville Saturday to put on the Initiatory work for the 35 candi dates who will receive the third and fourth degrees. Salem has been Invited to add its two candi dates for these degrees to the' list. Tbe Portland group will dedi cate the new addition to the Butteville Grange hall in the af ternoon services. Among those who are now planning to attend from Salem are: Mr. and Mrs. F. f. Townsend, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McDonald, Mrs. Clara Shields, Ly nan Fletcher and Miss Ethel yietcher. Salem grangers will also parti jlpate with other granges of the county in the union church ser vices .to be held Sunday, May 19, at 11 o'clock at Woodburn for grangers. May 10 (AP) Cyrus G. Northcott, aged father of Gordon Stewart -Northcott. was released from Jail on 11000 bail here today after being held for eight months as a ma terial witness In connection with boy slayings on his Wineville chicken ranch. Tom A. Northcott, of New York, the' man's brother, furnished the money. Yonng Northcott Is in death row at San Quentin penitentiary await Ing the outcome of his appeal from the death sentence. He was convicted of murdering three boys Cyras Northcott testified against Us son. Sanford Clark. Gordon Stewart Northcott' nephew, who revealed the crimes of the chicken ranch, was confined to the boys' indus trial school at WhittlerJ Calif. LONDON, May 10. (AP) David Lloyd George, liberal party leader, made his great election appeal to the new women voters tonight with an address to 10,000 in Albert hall and probably 30, 000 reached by radio broadcast to other towns. Nancy Samuel, 22 year old daughter of Sir Herbert Samuel presided and young wo men predominated throughout the great hall. The famous Welsh orator began with "Madam chairman, ladles, and the few gentlemen who have been permitted to come" Into this immense gathering," and then launched into the subject of dis armament which he had chosen for his appeal to the women. He expressed the belief that the story of the nations would have been different from 1914 on if Ger many and the other belligerents had given the franchise to women. "The cause of peace Is one for women," be explained. "You, can not trust men where fighting is concerned." BAPTISTS NOSE OUT WIN OVER M. E. E. 6 to .4; Ja son Lee upset the dope by losing 9 to 2 to Calvary Baptist and the Presbyterians swamped the Amer ican Lutherans 11 to 1 Thursday on Sweetland field to close the second week of play In the Sunday school baseball league. Dwight Adams pitched good ball for the Presbyterians to hold the Lutherans to one run. A "hit ting spree and three errors in suc cession in the last inning gave the First Baptists the four runs to win their game. The M. E. pitcher had held them to a few scattered hits until tbe last.
