Johnny Beck, star twirler for
the Salem Senators last year and
the year before that, now with
the Portland Bearers, finally got
big chance to start a Coast league
fame Wednesday. He pitched good
ball for six Innings, then headed
for the showers after the Angels
had scored five runs off his de
livery. Only three of them were
' hfned however. Beck has been
performing acceptably as a relief
pitcher, and stands a good chance
of sticking In the Coast league
despite his lack of experience.

Weather Again Viewed With
Much Apprehension Due
to Past Performance
Now for the big Oregon-Washington
league opening game! Of
course it's hazardous to predict
that the weather will permit base
ball here next Sunday when sim
ilar predictions have gone wrong
three times in succession previous
ly. But good weather through
the week and rain on Saturday
and Sunday can't happen every
week, all through the summer,
and there's more likelihood that
the Senators will be able to play
Mount Scott here next Sunday,
than there has been for the. pre
ceding three "opening games."
There was some talk a few
weeks ago that Mount Scott prob
ably wouldn't be one of the fast
est clubs in the circuit, but last
Sunday's game put all these sug
gestions to rout. It's true that
the Portlanders lost to Longview
5 to 4, but the Tigers were ahead
4 to 1 up to the sixth inning, and
then the Forest Rangers' rally
was brought about largely by a
couple of boners on the part of
Sax. Mount Scott hurler, which
aren't likely to happen again.
The Tigers are mostly young
sters, and since they all work at
the same industrial plant out In
the Mount Scott district, they get
plenty of opportunity to practice
together, an advantage they hold
over some of the other clubs. They
are certain to give the Senators
a hard battle.
At any rate, the chances are
that after all the delays, next Sun
day will be an ideal day for base
ball, and the local fans can flock
to Olinger field In the anticipation
of a fast game, which they can
view from safe and comfortuble
seats. The diamond has now been
located in Its permanent position,
with home plate directly in front
of the middle of the grandstand,
and vith plenty of space between
the base lines and the bleachers.
