ASTER IS DIFFICULT i FLOWER TO RAISE 4- 1 Hurried Wilting of Plant Is Ofttimes Noted; Cause Made Plain One of the most eVifficult an. . nuals to grow is the aster. When everything seems to be "golng along nicely, the plant tor no ' seeming reason will begin to wilt -down and die. The causes of this condition and the methods of pre- - Tenting them will be discussed In -this article. Anyone can raise asters from" seed if a good loose soil is to be' obtained. When sowing the seed' scatter a little powdered charcoal . in the soil to keep it sweet. Seed- ' lings must be transplanted in flat ; about two inches apart where 1 they should be left until they have assumed a large healthy growth. These plants are ready for tbe bed after danger of frost is over. Under no consideration should as ter plants be set in a wet soggy soil. Weather conditions some times prevent the setting of plants at the time when they have reach ed the correct transplanting stage. Rather than have it pecessary to transplant overly long, spindly or ungainly plauts, it is a good plan where the gardener grows his own plants to make a number of seed ings a few weeks apart. 'Puddllns' Root Necessary To transplant aster plants, as well as all other annual plants, almost perfect results will be ob tained if the roots are "puddled." To "puddle" a plant, prepare some mud the consistency of heavy ' cream in an old bucket. Dip the roots of the plants thoroughly in the mud. All the tiny rootlet are thu covered with the mud which prevents their drying out. This "puddling" method applies' only for such plants that have no soil attached to their roots. Some times where the soil is not too loose or dry, the plants will cut out of the flats in square and' will transplant without wilting. All young annual plants must be well watered after setting. A handful of sheep guano placed around the roots before watering mill bring surprising results. The aster plants should be cul tivated once a week until about ready to bloom. This will keep the plants in a healthy growing condition and will make it easier to resist the attacks of insects. Two or three applications of sheep guano during the growing season will produce larger blooms. Care must be taken not to let the fer tilizer touch the. plants. Insect War On Asters There area few common insects that destroy the aster. The tar nished plant bug is a small, yel lowish-brown bug about-the size of a house fly. It destroys the plants by sucking the tender tips of the plants. The plant, after the ravages of this pest become a dwarfed, bunched mass and will later turn black and die. A heavy spray of whale oil soap will make the plant repulsive to the bug. The sweetpea aphis attacks the leaves and stems of the aster in the late fall. Nicotine sulphate as a spray will control this Insect. An Insect that eats the petals ot the flowers Is the Pennsylvania blister beetle. Arsenate of -lead should be used. Since these three above mentioned insects appear commonly upon aster plants, it is a good precaution to apply all three measure of control in on spray and apply every week or 19 days. - The root aphides probably cause more damage to aster plant than any other pest. This small lice sucks the Juice of the roots, causing them to turn yellow, and sometimes to wilt and die. Aa a precaution against these lice, mix tobacco dust thoroughly with the soil. As a preventatlon, this mulching Is preferred before set ting in the permanent beds. When ever ants are seen, it may be un. derstood that there are root aphides as ants protect them. To bacco dust is repulsive to ants and will destroy aphides when they come in contact with them. Stem rot causes a great deal of trouble for aster growers. Thl condition ia caused for the most part by damp, rainy weather. The use of lime sprinkled around the plants will-somewhat relieve. the loss from thia source. ' To summarize, aster should be planted in a loose well-drained soil In a sunny location. To pre vent root ahpides, mix tobacco dust around the roots, of the plants two or three times during the season. Lime sprinkled around will relieve stem rot. A combined spray of nicotine-sulphate, arsen ate of lead, and whale oil soap will destroy the chewing and sucking insects that feed upon the leaves and stalks. Cultivate often during the growing season and apply generous amount of sheep manure around the robta and soak la with water. Appeal Notice ' Filed In Action In Court Here . Notice of appeal was filed Tues day la the county clerk's office by Cora Van Pelt, defendant In a damage action brought by Fay Walling who recovered a Judg ment for $6660 for injuries sus tained when she was (truck by an automobile driven by the defend ant. Miss Walling maintained that the defendant was at fault In the manner of her driving and that her own injuries were of such a nature that she would probably be unable to use one of her legs. The accident occurred on South Com mercial street. Miss Walling rid ing en a motorcycle which he bro ther was steering.
