Hew Policy Adopted by
Oakland Motor Co.;
Applies 30 Days
Another progressive step re
cently taken by a prominent au
tomobile manufacturer toward
better business methods in the
merchandising of used cars, came
to light here tod? 7 when the Oak
land Motor Car company an
nounced adoption of a national
policy under which all Oaklanrt
Pontiac dealers wil be asked to
furnish a written guarantee with
tl reconditioned used parts.
Under terms of the guaranty,
parts are furnished free t re
place any found defective during
the first 750 mile3 of driving
provided the mileage is run up
within 30 days after the sale. The
car also may be returned within
48 hours after the purchase if it
proves unsatisfactory and the ful
purchase price applied to any
other car. new or used, of equal
or greater value in the dealer's
stocks.
A written guaranty printed on
lithographed bond paper is i3sued
by the dealer to the purchaser at
the time of the sale, ryhile all
cars carrying the -niaranty also
have a windshield sticker on
which Is printed. "Reconditioned
Guaranted Good Will Used Car."
The object of the new plan, ac
cording to M. L. Buck, manager
of the used car department, is to
provide the purchaser with con
crete evidence of the good faith
of the dealer who makes the sale.
"Many of our reconditioned
cars are priced withtn the range
of the cheapest new car," Mr.
Buck stated. "If the money were
invested in the small new car the
purchaser would receive a stand
ard warranty with it. Tn making
a similar purchase of a good used
car he Is entitled to a like mea
sure of protection.
Weather Reports Now Phoned to Planes
' . ' ' .
The United States Department of Commerce Is In readiness to operate the first radio telephony station
on the Pacific coast. This station will report hourly, by phone, the weather conditions to planes in
flight. A new Chevrolet Six, with X. W. Bliss, the manager of the station, and 1A. Franklin Rose, is
shown in the foreground.

is natural then, of course, that
we must use fuels and lubrica

THE CARE OF TREES
HOW'S THE ROAD?
3fr S B 9fr 9 3
Answers Framed in Weekly Report From Oregon State
Highway Commission
Do not leave the soil heaped up
. around newly planted trees,
shrubs or evergreens. Rather
leave a depression around the
plant, cupping the soil, so to
speak, so it will receive and re
tain the water supplied by rain
fall rather than letting this run
off away from the plant. Trees
set out on lawns should not have
the grass or sod grow right up to
the tree. A space about the tree,
should be left open to the size of
the hole dug when planting the
tree, and the top soil should be
kept .cultivated all summer just
as one would cultivate a garden.
The depression will serve for
catching and holding the water,
; and the cultivation will greatly
aid In aerating the soil and in En
couraging the growth of the tree.
