The New OREGON STATESMAN, Sakm, Oregon, Toes&ty Hondas, March 5, 1929 L Ready for R-100 Mexican Troops Guard Forty Miles of Hmhwav Where Couple Pass I ! MEXICO CITY, Mare 4. (AP) Speeding orer 40 miles of closely ruarded highway. Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and his fiancee. Miss Anne Morrow,' jour neyed from Mexico City Saturday to this place of picturesque beauty and perpetual spring. They came in an automobile which the noted aviator steered with his left hand, his right arm and shoulder still being out of commission from the airplane "mishap" which the couple experienced Wednesday. t Th mAe tl a (nnrnm tn itinnt 10 minutes, beating by 20 minutes a second car in which Ambassador Morrow, his wife and elder daugh ter aroTet irom me capiiai. Precautions Taken The two machines traveled rlr tually between lines of troops for the entire distance, although few of the. guardians of the d latin gulshed Americans were visible from the roadside. Recent activl ties by bandits in this region caused special precautions to be taken by the Mexican government to prevent possible unpleasant ex periences to the famous flier, his sweetheart and her family. Both the government and the ambassador dislike to have the protection for such journeys too obvious. As a matter of fact they would scarcely admit the necessity for special guards existed. But the war department was Informed of the route of the automobiles well In advance of the time for departure. Troops Numerous Special detachments of soldiers were stationed along the highway, at comparatively brief Intervals. The gaps between these posts were covered by motorcycle scouts, the latter being under instructions to sped to concentration points and hurry the soldiers Into action if there was any sign of outlaws. Lindbergh and his fiancee spent miao - anernoon in an auiomoDiie drive in the -vicinity of the town4 The aviator was at the wheel 'as he was during the drive from Mex ico Cify. The Morrows were not at home to callers this evening. Cuernavaca Is filled with week end' visitors, most of them from Mexico City. Several cabinet mem bers are among those on holiday here.
