Sam Langford Already Down

pearance he has made In Salem,
will run up against a worthy ad
versary in -the semi-final six
round match on Wednesday's
fight card at the armory, it ss
announced Saturday by Match
maker Harry Plant, s f.
Murphy's - opponent is none
other than Jack. Peterson, a slug
ger of Murphy's own type except
that If anything he is a trif 1
faster. Peterson is - ther battles
who beat- Red. Hayes decisively
here not -long ago, and fans who
hare seen both Murphy and Pet
erson , fight hare been clamoring
to see them both In the ring at
once. ; Recently Peterson defeat
ed Joe Black well In Portland.
Weight Already Made
Prospects for Ihe main erent,
between: Young Sam Langford
and . Ted Fox, looked better than
eyer Saturday when George More,
Langford's manager, in a tele
phone conversation , with Plant
Saturday : reported that the col
ored fighter is already down to
the stipulated weight, 130 pounds
and Is' in perfect condition. ;
Fans in Portland are -confi
dent that Langford will win and
even some Salem Jans who aren't
yet convinced that Fox Is the real
contender that he appeared to be
in -his two fights here this year,
have the same slant at the result.
. Question Unsettled
Fox . knocked out Phil Bayes,
but Phil wasn't ; his old self by
any ' means and was further
handicapped by the-necessity for
taking off too much weight. Then
Fox won a decision . from Allie
Taylor, but he didn't have much
margin at that. ; Taylor hadn't
been given enough notice to get
In really good .condition, and theqr
again there Is that question about
Fox's left glove. ,
In the seventh 'round Fox got
time out to change gloves, the
first one being ripped;. up to that
time -the: fight had been even, and!
It wasn't until after that extra
rest that Ted showed any super
iority. Some tans are still main
taining that It would have ended
differently except for that. '
:: If Fox can even hold his" own
with Langford.' all these g.ue4
tlons - will be obliterated. Lang-
ford at vAstoria recently knocked
Benny Pels down six times; iti
his fight with Willie Gordon he
had the sailor on the canvas six
times before Gordon's handlers
threw in the towel, and the negra
held fats own against Canny
Nunes. - ' v-- . ... ' '

OUNG In years but old-in ex
perience, is William Young"
Stribllng, the Jdol of the
south, who fights Jack Sharkey at
Miami Beach, Fla., Feb. 27. He Is
veteran of hundreds of battles
that included such opponents as
Mike McTigue, Tommy Loughran,
Paul Berlenbach, Johnny Rlako
and other well known battlers.
But none of his previous etrts
carried such importance as his
coming mlxup with Sharkey. It
will be the biggest day of his car
eer. "
Until a year ago Stribllng had
met with only fair success. He had
worked his way to a shot at -the
light-heavyweight title twice, but
fell down on both occasions.
With the retirement of Gene
Tunney from the heavyweight
ranks, Willie stepped out forXhe
bigger game. He concentrated on
a punch with enough potency to
bowl over the big' boys, and as a
result something like 36 of his
last 45 fights were won by knock
outs. Most of them, probably, were
setups, but they prove that Strib
llng packs a wallop, something
that Sharkey will have to respect
when the pair climb into the Mi
ami Belch ring.
Stribllng is only 24 years old.
He was born at Bainbridge, Ga.,
Dee, ,26, 1904, and made his pro
fessional boxing debut in 1921.

word came over the wire that the
Salem high quintet, after losing

The "I told you so" had ref

trouble was lack of strong com
