(NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY)
.
CHAPTER XLIV
BYRD ate her breakfast alone.
" Mrs. Hamilton refused to
speak to her, and Pat wai
lying In bed. 111.
Byrd was grateful for the pres
ence of Mandy. She helped a little
to coyer her feeling of terrible de
pression. It seemed to Byrd that
all her efforts since her marriage
had been in vain. She "telt that
everything waa doomed, her mar
riage, her home, her whole life!
Everything!
A shiver trickled every now and
then up and down her spine, as
'he recalled the awful scene of the
night before. .
- She would remember to her dy
ing day the look on Pat's face as
Henrietta's tall, lank figure, re
sembling, in her high-necked, long
sleeved, cotton nightdress, one of
Dante's avenging angels straight
from purgatory, glowered in the
doorway.
Mrs. Hamilton had wormed ev
erything out of . them. She had
learned that Pat wasn't in bus
iness college. She had learned that
she was spending the allowance
her father had given her to put
her through- school, chasing
around. She had learned that she
was working in a department
store. And horror of horrors, she
knew that Pat was "under the in
fluence of.'
"To think I'd live to see the
day when one of my girls should
come to this!" she moaned. "I'd
rather see her dead!"
She had collapsed Into the little
rocker and sat with her head bur
ied in her hands, her whole gaunt
frame shaking with terrific sobs.
Byrd was terribly sorry for her.
"Moms; dear," said Byrd, diffi
dently, putting her arms around
her mother's shoulders, "it's not
as bad as that. Tou're just letting
yourself think the worst about
things. Pat hasn't been chasing
around. This just happened to
happen!"

again. "Tou're no better than your
sister, young lady. I thought you
would have to set her a good ex
ample 'and that would straighten
yon out, too. Ton probably led her
into this." . ,
Byrd decided not to roil up fur
ther waters already turbid.
They had talked on and on for
hours, getting nownere, Pat and
Byrd taking turns trying to ap
pease their mother and tp convince
her that Pat wasn't the kind of
person that her mother seemed to
enjoy thinking she waa.
"Well, young woman." said
Mrs. Hamilton, finally, eyeing Pat
as if she were a leper that might
contaminate the world, "you're
going back to Jacksonville with
me tomorrow night."
Poor Pat! Byrd's heart ached
for her. She wished she could pre
vent her going back home, but
Byrd knew that her mother was
adamant when once her mind was
made up.
She nibbled at a little piece of
toast and dipped into her egg.
Her appetite was completely eone.
"Wa'sa matter, honey t" asked
Mandy, dolefully. "You ain't
enough to keep this 'ere little bird
alive."
Byrd tried to smile into Mandy's
face.
"Did you ever read Aristotle?"
asked Byrd, suddenly. "His phllos
softhy was that even amidst chaos
one could find happiness. I don't
believe itl"
Mandy looked startled.
"G'wan, Mis' Browning, I heard
this Aristotle preach las' Sunday
and he says "
"You're fooling," laughed Byrd.
"Amanda Amanda you never
told me your last name, Amanda!"
"It's my last husban's last name,
ma'arrt," said Mandy. "My las'
name's Ammonia. Mandy Atni
monla."
While she was talking to Mandy
the telephone rang. It was Prog
ress Polk, asking her to stop down
at the bank some time during the
morning.
Byrd was glad to have an excuse
to get out of the house. .
She ran up to see Pat before
she left, but Pat was sleeping.
She looked like a pink petal
curled up under the garlanded silk
comforter, her face flushed with
its usual high color with every
sign of last night's orgy gone.
Byrd drove directly to Mr.
Polk's bank, and found him wait
ing for her In his private office.
"Everything's fixed up," he an
nounced, cheerfully, as she slump
ed into a chair beside his desk.
She looked tired and ill and wor
ried. "You better take a little va
cation yourself, child. You look
sort of caved in."
Mr. Polk looked at Byrd anx
iously. Her blue eyes, deep and
shadowy, had little pockets of
worry around them.
"You know the. old saying
about life being one damn thing
after the other?" smiled Byrd, a
bit wanly.
She suddenly had the over
whelming feeling that she wanted
to tell Mr. Polk all her troubles.
It would help her bear them if she
could talk about them. He was an
understanding person and a life
long friend of her father's. His
kindly, open face seemed to Invite
her confidence.
"I'm sick with worry over the
Builders' Supply stock," Byrd be
gan. "Jack Duncan owns half of
It, and he may decide to apply his
'get-rich-quick' methods to It."
"There's some danger of his
manipulating it," said Mr. Polk,
particularly when he can throw
the blame, if necessary, on your
husband's shoulders."
"I wish you'd approach him,"
suggested Byrd.
Mr. Polk shook his head.
"I put the screws on him to get
this back," Indicating a check for
two thousand dollars. "We know
Mr. Browning invested at least
that much in those realty com
panies. At least, we compromised
on this in order to get the matter
settled."
"I'm so glad that Larry's out
of, that," said Byrd. intensely re
lieved. "If only we owned all ol
the Builders stock."
, "Well watch our chance. It may
corn sooner than we expect," he
said encouragingly.
Mr. Polk told Byrd that gossip
had it that Duncan naa nougni a
house for a woman who was for
merly his stenographer, known
about town as "The Canary." He
had also bought her a ear, jewels
and expensive clothes. One of
their own detectives was keeping
pretty close tab on his affairs.
"And I happen to know that the
police are weaving - a fatal net
about him. They've received in
structions to see (hat he doesn't
leave town," Mr. Polk Informed
Byrd. "That's to be kept strictly
under the hat.
"On, is it as bad as that?" cried
Byrd. "How terrible for Margy
and his children!"
Byrd was distressed. It couldn't
be possible that Jack Duncan, a
friend and partner of Larry's, was
facing disgrace and rum and prob
ably a long penitentiary sentence
"I predict that it won't be rery
long now when xnoney'll grow
scarce and you'll have a chance
to buy back his share of the Build
ers' stock, repeated Mr. Polk.
He handed Byrd the check for
two thousand dollars.
"Keep it here until I'm read;
to use it," said Byrd. ,
She was thinking that she
hadn't the least idea where she
could get the balance required to
purchase Jack's stock. But she'd
get it somewhere. Her reputation
and Larry's depended upon that
purchase!
As Byrd walked through the
revolving doors leading to the
street, there seemed to be a subtle
excitement in the air. The clamor
of newsboys' voices, the hurrying
of people to the corners, where
they were congregated, buying pa
pers, gave her a premonition of
something tragic having happened.
'All about prominent broker be
ing jailed for attempted murder!
All about an attempted .murder at
a wild drinking party! All about
attempted murder! Murder!
With fingers that had suddenly
turned into little Icicles. Byrd
fumbled In her purse for three
cents and pushed through the
crowd. She managed to buy a
paper. .
She hurried back into the bank,
into the ladies' lounging room, and
dropped into a chair. There It
was, an eight-column streamer. In
type two inches high.
JOHN DUNCAN JAILED FOL
LOWING WILD PARTY
FISTCDPFS FOLLOW QUARREL
Jack Duncan, prominent broker,
smashed the nose of a well-known
citiien during an argument at a
dinner party in Duncan's private
suite at the Knickerbocker club
last night.
Duncan was-accused by his as-
WlaWipf having sold him twenty
thousand dollars of worthless
stock under the most fraudulent
misrepresentations.
The altercation developed into
a battle which lasted until the
men could be separated. Duncan
is out on ball on an asault and
battery charge.
The prosecution has a list of the
guests and will call them as witnesses.
Duncan's wife, Margaret Mc
Manus. formerly of Ypsllantl,
Mich., is suing Duncan for divorce
on grounds of desertion, gross
neglect and cruelty and sensation
al developments are expected at
the trial, which has been set for
the first part of November.
Prosecutor McAvoy says he will
start an immediate investigation
into the affairs of the Hillandale
and Sunset Point Realty compan
ies, of which Duncan is president.
Byrd felt stunned. Suddenly the
significance of the word "wit
nesses" struck her like a bolt of
out of the sky. Pat might be called
as a witness. She must hurry
home and use every inducement
to persuade Pat to return to Jack
sonville for a little while at least,
until this affair should blow over.
Byrd hurried out into the kit
chen, where Mandy was getting
lunch.
"Where's Pat?" she asked, try
ing to keep the hysterical note out
it her voice. "Is she still sleep
ing?" "No'm. Mis' Browning." Man

to be "put away."
Bill Ikes, a special detective,
was assigned today as a body
guard to Fltts, Wheeler said, and
the guard placed at 'the district

Wheeler said information that
gangsters were planning to take
the new young district attorney
"for a ride," if he attempted to
carry out the "clean up" which
he has started, had reached him
two weeks ago, and that there
were "new developments" today.
Meanwhile, Fitts, accompanied
