This represented a gain of 373 telephones orer the fame period a year ago when 6138 telephones were used here. In the local exchange are 1090! fajni telephone users, which leaves a net of 6490 users In the cityj proper, une year ago 1073 farm users were reported, the largest part or tne gain in 192S being made in the city itself. Distribution of the December, 1928, directories has been com pleted locally and the farm books are to be sent out during the re mainder of this week. In so far as possible old telephone books have been taken up bjr the company to prevent use of Incorrect numbers. Salem Boy Scouts handled distri bution of the new directories in the city. PRESIDENT LAUDS ill STUDENTS Praise from Edward J. Saun ders, secretary to President Cool Idge, for the Vanguard class of Cbemawa Indian school, is con tained In a letter received this week by O. Wilder Fort, teacher of the boys' and organizer of the class. Fort is a member of the original Vanguard class founded 25 years, ago by E. B. Crowe of Raleigh, N.. C. Saanders, in his letter, remark ed that the Indian boys "are a fine group and should make useful eltlsens. If the president could make an exception In your case, he would be only too glad to send them a nersonal messaee."
