Si Si- r tECIONHORS GRIFFITH TODAY Services for Former State Commander to be Held at 2 o'clock P. M. Members of the American Le gion and of the B. P. O. E. as well as countless rrlends affiliated with neither organization, will pay final respects to George P. Griffith, former department com mander of the legion in Oregon and former deputy state treasurer, at the funeral services which will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock t the Rlgdon chapel. He died Sun day night at 8 o'clock after an 111 yeas of several years. Mr. Griffith was born in Green od, Johnston county, Indiana, Ijmber 24, 1879, and moved with his parents to Pawnee City, Neb., when he was 5. He obtained his early education in that city, graduating from the high school there and entering' the University of Nebraska, from which institution he graduated in 1899. Later he taught school in Nebraska, and served as city superintendent of schools in Paw nee for several years, having been elevated to that post while principal of the high school there. Organizer of Bank In 1913 Mr. Griffith came to Oregon, establishing himself in Jefferson, where he organized the Oregon State bank of Jefferson, of which institution he long was president. When the United States entered the world war Mr. Griffith ap plied for permission to join the officers' training camp at the Presidio, San Francisco, Cal.. where he won a commission as second lieutenant in the quarter-. master s corps, serving with cre dit for a year and a half in France and being mustered out as a first lieutenant. He was with the Amer ican army of occupation- vp the Jthin 3 when the war ended. Held State Office After his return to civil life Mr. Griffith entered the state treas urer's department and served as deputy under State Treasurer Kay from January 1, 1925, to March 23, 1927, when he was compelled to resign on account of ill health. Mr. Griffith was one of the most active" and influential members of the American Legion in Oregon. Ho was a member of the execu tive committee of Capitol post, No. 9. Salem from the date of its or ganization and served as com mander of that post In 1923. He also was a member of the state executive committee of the Legion and was state commander in 1924 and 1925. Active In Lodge Work Mr. Griffith for some years was cne of the owners of the Marion Automobile company of Salem and at ore time president of the Salem Automotive Dealers association. He was a member of the Elks, the Masons and the Shrine. He is survived by his widow Ruby o. Griffith, and four sisters, Mrs. Edith Anderson, Salem' Miss Olive Griffith, Corvallis; Mrs Laura Greenfield, Wichita, Kan , and Mrs. E. D.
